    No brakes and stalling!

Ok, so I'm driving home last night, and I notice my brakes aren't working, and the car has stalled. I slow down using the e brakes, restart, and the car want to stall unless i keep on the throttle. I manage to pull into an alley, but still have nothing in the brake dept. So, any ideas? At idle, it almost stalls, and bounces back up to about 1k. Am I f'd? Help!

    Re: No brakes and stalling!

Are the brakes just difficult to push, or do they not work at all? If they are just hard to push I would check the big vacuum line on the brake booster.

    Brake booster

you would hear alot of air coming from back of the engine bay where the brake booster is, to fix you have to seal it for which there are various methods, search audiworld

    Re: No brakes and stalling!

I think theres a vaccum line from the brake booster to the engine somewhere... perhaps it got disconnected... you may wanna check the brake booster for any disconnected lines and trace them back to make sure its connected... if that line is disconnected, you probably have a big air leak which is why the motor keeps stalling, and you will have very little to no brakes at all..

    Re: No brakes and stalling!

Is this something a normal shop can fix? I had to leave my car in a small ski resort trown, and towing it home is $375. There's a few shops there, but no audi ones obviously. And yes, I had to push as hard as I could to get any kind of braking.

    Re: No brakes and stalling!

You have a vacuum leak and a bad one. It could be at or near the brake booster, but in reality it could be any where in the vacuum system. I large enough leak will cause very poor idle and stalling and no brake boosting. It should be pretty easy to find with a pressure tester. You can even temporarily repair a vacuum line with electrical tape. just stay out of boost until it gets replaced. good luck and post the outcome so we can all learn from this!

Check the hose that goes into the firewall in the middle of the car. It's about 3/4" diameter. See if it's properly connected. On your car it will also go to the accordion hose. Check that spot as well. What town is the car in?

I had to leave it in Banff. Getting towed back today. Only $400, what a deal. I'm sure it's going to be an easy fix. I still want to see your stage 3 now the snows gone, and talk to you about doing mine. Whens good?

Oh man I was just in Bnaff. Wish I could have helped. I have been carrying my pressure tester around since my last trip to Calgary where Jerbel had to help me lol. Yay for bad spark plugs and a bad N75 all at the sametime.

    Re: No brakes and stalling!

i had the same problem, all of a sudden i had no brakes, horrible idle and i went through gas like a MO FO- like 1/4 tank just limping it home less than 1/2 mile away.

you will see the like "about 1/2 inch solid black.. kinda shiny) comming through the top of your firewall to the right of the motor. follow that line down and where it connects theres a junction, its a 3 way. the line from the firewall plugs into this, i think you will find this to be disconnected or it blew out from the line, you can get some $3 silicone and run a bead around the top of the connection and shuv it back in. trust me it will work, and i believe that is your problem...

hope that helps and sorry you had that hudge towing bill!!!
If it aint broke... Dont fix it!

Damn it must be our crazy weather changes of recent because my car started doing the same thing on Sunday, brake pressure was fine then rock solid, then fine etc. etc. At idle it started stumbling and the dmn CEL pops up so got home looked under hood and sure enough that brake booster line connection behind the intake there had come apart, so just a little JB weld it's tip-top again, at least for now, damn Calgary weather!

    Re: No brakes and stalling!

Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. Here's a link to a pic of the part for reference (and future searches). My JB Weld attempt was not so successful, but I used wire to keep the two pieces together until I got a new replacement part.

    Re: No brakes and stalling!

Craig at Genuineaudiparts.com has good pricing on this item.. think it's around $70 or so from him.

I think it's smart for any high mileage S4 to just replace as a wear and tear part, based on what i've been reading lately, and my experience.

    Re: No brakes and stalling!

Thanks for all the help! It was in fact that hose. Someone had replaced it before I bought it, and the clamp had come off. The fix was cheap, but the towing was not so fun. $525, for 132 kms. Now how am I gonna pay for my lapdances? Kidding, but thanks again to everyone.

I am having the same problem but I can NOT find anything disconnected back there. How do you do a pressure test on these cars?
