Question Best method for installing new exhaust manifold studs?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I pulled my exhaust manifold off this evening. Stupid, sexy 8mm studs. What a hunk of junk. Turns out I did shear a stud off and I sheared two more off when I pulled everything apart.

Gotta drill and tap the four holes for new 10mm studs. Also have to drill out the turbine inlet flange to accommodate. What is the thread count on these? 10x1.25?

Once my machine shop has everything redrilled, how do I install the new studs? Do I put two nuts together and use that to torque the studs down?

    Thanks!

Stud extractor set . . . or just wing it because you don't use these often and they aren't cheap. Using two nuts is the way I'd go if I didn't have these.

So, two nuts together to put the new studs back in?

Yep, but you don't have to go crazy on the torqueing of them, just snug.

install them hand tight with a little anti-seize aand then torque the nuts to like 40ft/lb or so and you will be fine

Re: Best method for installing new exhaust manifold studs?

Thanks. I did my best with what was available to me (new 8mm studs) and the fact that I need my car tomorrow. I'll revisit this in a more permanent fix (10mm) when I do my 2.0L swap.
