2001 A4 Timing belt question, image included.Help!

Just put timing belt in the A4, but want to make sure this black piece is positioned/turned correctly. Car is AWM engine. Thanks.

I didn't have a piece like that, just a round washer:

If nothing attaches to it it shouldn't matter.

might be a day late, but i just did mine last month... and got my kit from ECS tuning... i didint have that piece either. and i'm an '01 also.

it looks like it should lock into the hex hole maybe to stop it rotating if it comes loose? I have never seen one of those and i have done many different A4 belts,mine have all looked Durkins'

my 2001 didn't have that black thing either.

the only thing we could figure is this is a late VIN 01 and it must of had some weird upgrades. I havent been able to find anyone anywhere that has had this. Surely there is another car out there like this in the world?!?!

Thanks for all your help. After looking at how I THINK it was when we took it off the car and few other bad angle shots, we left it the way it was and reassembled the car. Started up fine with no issues.

I have to say that this was a much easier job then my AEB engine. The water pump was a much easier change, but the thermostat was a bigger pain in the @ss... o well its done..
