Weekend Goal: Install SB Stg 3 Clutch

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    DAY 1 Progress

So yesterday at about 5:00pm me and two friends started tearing apart my car to get the transmission out. We're using the DIY on audiworld, and I'm expecting it to take all weekend.

Progress as of 1:30am last night:
    airbox/coolant tank out
    turbo to cat bolts off
    front axles unbolted from tranny
pass. side heatshield (over the axle) out
top 3 engine to tranny bolts out
    starter bolts out

I snapped one T40 torx bit trying to get the driveshaft off, so we had to make a 1am walmart run to get a torx set. That was pretty fun.

Here's where we are right now:

I stripped one of the driveshaft bolts . One of the guys has a dremel at his house with a cutting wheel, so after he wakes up (that lazy ass), we're going to run and grab it. I'm hoping we can just cut a slot in the screw and use a screwdriver to turn it out. there's really not enough leverage to hammer a t45 torx bit into it.

Today the plan is to get the transmission dropped, and get that clutch all bolted up. Maybe we can get it back in the car tonight but I'm betting that will happen tomorrow.

You can use just a vise-grip to take that last bolt out. I had to do the same when a few of the front axle bolts stripped.

hammer a bigger torx bolt into the driveshaft, should have used a swivel socket a plain extension wont work with the angle it gives you (which Im assuming you used)

Bingo, vice-grips are awesome for stuff like this. I had to use them on the lower 2 engine-tranny bolts as well because I couldn't fit a wrench around the subframe.

Why are you using torx bits for those driveshaft bolts? Kragen (or autozone, whatever you guys have out there) sell those triple square bits for like 10 bucks...

what he said. even if it is stripped with the torx bit the triple square might still work.

Re: Weekend Goal: Install SB Stg 3 Clutch

So I tried to throw some vice grips on that bolt, they just slid off the bolt when we tried to turn it. Then we used a grinder to make one of the sides flat (more grip!?), but it just rounded the edge of that side.

We can't heat the bolt, I only have propane and I think it would damage the stuff around the bolt. The grinder is too big to cut a slot in the head of the screw for a screwdriver, so right now we're pretty stuck.

I was thinking about using easy-outs, but I've heard horror stories of using those.

someone just had the idea on another forum of welding a piece of stock to the bolt, I think we're gonna try it. My friend with the welder will be here late tonight, I'll keep you guys updated!

the bolts strip out on a lot of people because beyond popluar belief, its not a torx bit its a tripple square hex bit.

It is a serrated 8mm hence why you stripped it.

I suggest you replace all those bolts before you have a problem down the road.

Re: Weekend Goal: Install SB Stg 3 Clutch

Well we ended up being able to cut a slot in the stuck bolt and get it off with a screwdriver, woo.

Right now everything is disconnected from the tranny, and we're ready to pull it out. We can't get the rear drive shaft disconnected from the rear of the transmission! Any advice on getting that out of there?

I never even took my tranny out from under the car. just move it out of the way so you can change the clutch. I even left it on the jack, made it really easy to go back in. Good luck

You're going to have fun putting it back in if you're doing this on jack stands.

I have done it many times on jack stands and ramps. Only thing that is hard is trying to get the trans out from under the car. To do so you have to put the trans on the ground and jack up the car, hard part is getting the trans back on the jack to put it back in.

If you have a big socket bolt for the crank up front, you can have someone hold it from spinning it. Then again your engine isn't out haha.

Im sure there's another way to do it.

Does anybody know what the deal is with that piece of metal hanging out cutting up my transmission casing? It sticks out about 3/8" from the flywheel/pressure plate.

    Good progress man.

I helped do this last week and I heard a tip. The engine should only be turned clockwise so when you hold the crank bolt to sustain the motor from turning, make sure it does not turn counter-clockwise.

    Nice choice in clutch too.

What happens if you turn it the other way? I think I only turned it clockwise, but I could have turned it counter clockwise without thinking.

What the heck is this off of? I'm guessing it's off of a v6, but what do you guys think? The guy he bought it from said it's from a 97 1.8t.

It was out of a 1997 A4 [according to the guy on ebay].

The part that's confusing me is that the new one is 8 bolt while my original is 6 bolt.

    078 105 266A

Does that look like a part number? That's the only thing I could find.

    Nevermind, it's a 12v flywheel off of a 97 A4.

If anybody needs a 12v flywheel w/ clutch and pressure plate, my friends selling it for $79.99 + shipping!

    thats a v6 flywheel.

either 2.8 or 2.7t. not sure which one.

but most anything starting w/ 078 is going to be a v6 part. or i should say, was originally a v6 part. you may find something w/ an 078 # that happened to make it on to a different motor. but def not a flywheel.
