The smaller lowers can be found on ebay for really cheap.

I have recently done this mod using expanded aluminum, check over at audiforums.com The post is tagged C5 front lower grille mods. This mod was really simple and definitely produced the desired affect. I will bump the post to the top

Re: Has anyone used mesh (chicken wire) on the front and lower grills?

Heres the problem do the Rs6 lower grills work on the 00 a6's? I know for a fact the 02+ grills do not fit, nor do the s6's or the Rs6. Also today I removed the "quattro" badge from my grill I have an 00 and it really makes the grill look better. IMHO. It just looks even, but I think I'll put it back on soon.

I know the upper grill wont, but to me the lowers look very very similar. I might try to buy a set and then just sell them if they don't fit.

Re: Has anyone used mesh (chicken wire) on the front and lower grills?

Give it a try and let us know. I thought that the RS6 grilles would fit into the C5 4.2 but not the 2.7t. If you can make them fit, it would be one sexy front grille!!

Re: Has anyone used mesh (chicken wire) on the front and lower grills?

they fit you just gotta mod the shit out of it, Personally I cut the entire grill out of the RS6 one, cut it to fit my 99's grill then swapped the mesh into the shell of my 99's grill that I cut out the horizontal plastic lines out of, it looks OEM and will look great installed, I'll post up some pics soon.

Ok so on the 01-'s the medel bit that is under the grill, you left that in place right? I really would like to see pics. From my understanding you just cut the Rs6 grill to fit. How much chrome is left around the outside?

Re: Has anyone used mesh (chicken wire) on the front and lower grills?

alright I'll describe what I did:

I ordered an RS6 upper and lower grill off ebay 110$
I picked up an old pre-facelift (99') upper and lower grill 5$

I cut out the mesh parts from the upper and lower grill on both grills, leaving the chrome out side.

I placed the RS6 meshing over the 99' upper and lower grill and traced around where the meshing would sit into place.

I then trimmed the RS6 mesh to fit the 99' grill and mixed up industrial grade apoxy and glued it on there and then placed clamps on all 4 corners and let it dry for a day.

I now need to pop this into my grill, but I dont know how to remove the grill out of my car without breaking it, how do I do this? I didnt use the grill on my car incase this experiment went haywire but It didnt.

Im making another one for a buddy so Ill take step by step shots or just shoot a vid.

OEM is what I like, and Cerfus I am looking at doing this myself also, so let me know when you get it done. I'm local and would like to see how yours turns out. I also noticed that the AR lowers come with mesh already, I wonder if they would fit a sedan since both are C5 wide with 4.2 and narrow 2.7, 3.0, 2.8?
