    I hate car jacks....especially Audi's

I used to think the widowmaker was actually a pretty ingenious design. Small, compact, seemed to work well. I jack up my car to do my brakes and put on the 269mm rears and I get the front end up, go to jack up the rear and the stupid jack makes the car shift! WTF!!! I try a few different ways to jack the car and the thing still freakin' moves! I wish I had a lift......SO much easier. Now I have to drain the clutch cylinder, lower the car, change the rear brakes, bleed the backs, lower the car, then raise it again to bleed the fronts.

Anyone ever try a motorcycle jack under our cars? If it has the reach you could put it under the subframe, lift and support and then move to the back......

Widowmakers suck, they do their job, kinda, for a side of the road fix but you should never use one to work on your car. Your just asking for it. My a4 jetta was slamed and a jack wouldn't go under it. I found myself using the widowmaker so often I found one and welded a 1 foot square of steel on the bottom of it. That way it couldn't roll sided to side as easy.

    Re: I hate car jacks....especially Audi's

should be workin on level ground when jacking up the car and even if u'r on level ground, should always have u'r ebrake on and car in gear. when u need the whole car up in the air, do the front first so the ebrake holds the car from shifting. then do the rear. worse case scenerio, chalk the wheels with something.. i like to use old brake drums or rotors cuz i just happen to have alot of these around my garage

Why even bother with that thing, go to Canadian Tire and get a real jack with stands. It will cost you like $150 bucks and youll have it forever. Or if you dont want to spend alot of money just go to Princess Auto, I picked up two 3 ton jack stands the other day for $15. Its not worth risking your life or damaging your car with the factory jack.

I don't bother using that thing. I tried it once and the car almost fell off. Now I just use my dad's Toyota jack and 3-ton jack stands.

this and some jackstands is what you need. The jack included with the car is for emergencies only.

I have a three ton craftsman jack that came with two 3 ton jack stands, a seat creap, and fender covers, it was on sale for $180 something, it works great, takes a few pumps to get up to load, but it will lift so much.

034 Motorsports sells this little piece you can put onto a regular jack so you can jack it up from the same spot as the widowmaker.
Jack and 2 jackstands should cost you more than $35

    Re: I hate car jacks....especially Audi's

I was using my stock one too much and was afraid of it falling and damaging something so I just invested in a craftsman at sears hardware, it does the job.

    Re: I hate car jacks....especially Audi's

Oh....sorry guys....I didn't mean to misrepresent. I only use the widowmaker to jack up the car. I ALWAYS put it on stands. When I do jack it up it's always front first w/ e-brake on. But this time, when I was doing the rears, the car kept shifting. It was weird. I've never seen that before. I think the widowmaker was lifting the car on a funny angle.

I used to have a hydraulic jack but it blew out on me after 1.5 years. I've debated about getting another one...the Michelin one would be nice. I'd still like to find a way to make a motorcycle/F1 type of jack.

    Re: I hate car jacks....especially Audi's

Not an Audi but I had the car fall off a Nissan jack when trying to put a spare on because of a flat when the car fell off the jack my foot was about 5 inches away from the rotor when it fell, however the rotor fell ontop of the tire I took off..

My fault for not putting the e-brake on however.. ever since then I got myself some good jack stands and a good jack.

when changing a flat tire, take the wheel off and put it under the car next to the jack. if it falls off the wheel will catch the car and save your foot.

    Re: I hate car jacks....especially Audi's

It was kinda a tight spot I parked next to a curb I'm glad the tire saved it from sinking too low or it would of been a b**** to get a jack back under the car.

At least it worked, my old Ford Ranger came with a jack that wasn't tall enough to raise the tire off the ground.

    Re: I hate car jacks....especially Audi's

all I can say is after all that happened I invested in wheel chocks and pull my e-brake just to be safe. Going to need to buy another jack since I got rid of it after I sold the Subaru.. Something with a decent jacking height... 13 1/2 inches was hardly enough to lift both rear tires on the Subaru lifting by the rear diff.

I will never forget this as a little kid living in CA this nut (forgot who he was) I was riding with him and he got a flat and pulled the car over however it was on a slant and the passenger side of the car the grass sloped down to a small river. Well I was just happen to be walking away when I saw the car shift on the jacks towards me.. It never fell but it would of been the end.
