When i turn my car in the morning, it doesn't start right away (it chokes a few times) and idles above 1k rpm for a min or two before the rpm drops. The engine sound/vibration also drops after a min or so. Is it just a cold engine?

    Re: Is this normal?

Sounds normal. The B7 does seem to suffer from cold starts a little bit. Not sure why. I wonder if it is something to do with fact that the 2.0 FSI engine is actually a diesel-designed engine made for gas?

My car does the same in the am, and numerous other people that I know have the same issue. I think it has something to do with al this ethanol in the gas also.

    Re: Is this normal?

it actually has to do with how (relatively) tall FSI engine block is. that sound you hear when you open the driver's door is the fuel pump because gas has a hard time getting all the way up to intake height. that said, the ignition gas has a little farther than normal to travel.

that's my story and i'm sticking to it...

    Re: Is this normal?

Thanks for the quick reply guys, maybe because i park my car uphill on my driveway it takes the fuel a little bit longer to travel to the engine.

same thing happens on mine. I notice the hard initial start more now in the warm weather though....thought it might have something to do w/ my hot air intake too....

Weird.. mines the complete opposite.. it only did that during the winter and during days of pretty cold temperatures. Now that its spring and its relatively warmer in the mornings its a normal smooth start. Though after going through this thread, I also recently started strictly using just one brand of gas (Petro-Canada 91 Premium) highest grade we get here, it contains no ethanol though it contains "Super Clean", a engine cleaning additive that removes deposits. It may all just be in my head but after 10 or so consecutive tanks my engine became way smoother. So there may be merit in the type of gas you put in and the amount of ethanol content.

    My start procedure:
-Open door, hear the FSI pump
-Insert key, turn one position forward, hear more pump related noise,
-Once the noise stops, and pressure is built up, I finally start the car and it idles at 1000rpm if the oil is cold and its the first start in the morning. After a min engine drops down to under 1000rpm and all is normal and smooth.

Though, this whole thing has been discussed before. General consensus is its just the nature and design of the FSI engine that it takes a longer time to build up fuel pressure for ignition.
