I hit a dog today :(

I was on my way over to drop my cylinder head off at Bob@QED's.

To make a long story short.... I wound up hitting this yellow lab at around 10mph. As I swerved away from her she ran towards me. Hit my bumper in the driver lower area. My front tire may have gone over her.

I think I dislocated her front leg and may have broken it. I immediately slammed on the brakes which caused the cylinder head to fly across my trunk. I jumped out to tend to the dog. Wound up there for almost an hour as we waited for the owner to come. I was doing my best to keep the dog calm for she was in shock. The owner eventually came and took the dog to the vet. I then parted ways.

Turns out the cylinder head leaked oil all over my trunk after flying across it. I thought I got all the oil out but I guess I didn't. The good news is my dog's blanket (twin comforter) that I still had in there took the brunt of it. It is now covered in oil and the AVant's trunk is fine. Looks like Omega is getting a new blanket for our road trips. Oh, and I shattered the S4 fog light. The fog light grille is okay but now I need a new fog light. No damage to the bumper or fender.


I feel so bad for the incident and dog but there is nothing I can do about it. I did my best to take care of the dog until the owner came. Such a shame...

^^ That sux, at least the dogs fine! and ur trunk! I think Audis tend to be so beautiful that dogs while staring at their beauty tend to walk right into them!

The dog didn't have a collar and the owner said she runs across the street all the time. Knowing that there is/was nothing I could do. It was bound to happen at some point.


I, too, always keep my dog on a leash unless we're in the woods on a hike. Siberian Huskies want to run and I live in a super busy street. Paranoid perhaps.

^x2 Yep, it's the law here, but things happen, dogs get loose etc. My siberian has an appriciation for the dangers of traffic now after he got loose & was hit within seconds of escaping.
Sorry you had to deal with all that, what a bummer.

Aww, poor dog. At least it's ok though. And at least you didnt drive away when you hit it. Just an unfortunate part of life that comes around sometimes.

I am a complete and total newb when it comes to dogs and god-forbid i was to hit one I would want to knwo what to do, to keep it relatively alive...

The owner's daughters were there. The dog was following them across the street but the two girls already crossed well before I was there. They called their mom, whom was on the other side of town. When the mom arrived she was very mellow and calm. I was expecting hysterics. She called the vet and we put the dog on a blanket and carried the blanket into their minivan. I asked if they needed anymore help and they said no. That was it.

I was trying to keep the dog calm for she was going into shock. She was all nervous and such. So, I eventually got her to lay down and kept petting her, trying to keep her calm and relaxed. That was when I also noticed she might have disclocated her shoulder (which hurts like a bitch).

Yeah. My S4 bumper used to be red. This winter has destroyed the new paint. Lots of chips and scratches.

Aww man... blast from my past.
Mine is in body shop now getting front re-done. I would've sworn from the damage that my dog-hit was a gonner. His eyes were rolled back and he was convulsing. No external injuries, but I thought he had to be bleeding internaly.
I didn't sleep well that night.
But, he lived through it better than my car did.
The funny thing is, if I would've hit a human, I would've check the damage to my car first, lol. But with a dog, I didn't even care about the car at first. The dog tore my heart out laying there. Hope everything works out for you.
In my case, both the dog and my car are coming out of it better than they went in. Dog now is kept with a collar on and my car is getting some serious nice body work done.

I did the same. Didn't even think of my car. I was too busy staring at the dog and swerved sideways. Forgot to push the clutch in and stalled it out. Pulled the e-brake. Flung open the door and ran after the dog. My car was in the street for about 20mins with the dash light up from stalling it out and the door wide open.

I may never know about the dog. It happened about an hour from my house. I might stop by when I'm rolling through to pick up my engine from Bob@QED whenever he finishes it (a month or two?).

I just caught my dog sniffing my pants. I think Omega smells the yellow lab. It'll be tough to sleep tonight.

IF they asked to pay half the vet bills i would flip. First the dog shouldn't be running around freely, second without a collar and third no one watching the dog.

Sorry to hear about the pooch....I hope she recovers fully. This is why I make sure my dog remains obedient at all times when off-leash.

Another good thing to hear is that the owner was calm, I mean yea you hit the dog but you are not at fault. I live in NYC and as far as i know its the law to keep your dog on a leash, I think. But my pup needs to be kept on a leash either way, she is a German Pinscher, they are active dogs and well lets say she doesnt look both ways like they teach you to do in school. I have to pull her back many times so nothing happens.

Car parts are replaceable, someone's life is not.

Its sad but true. I feel the same exact way. I have never hit a domestic animal (racoons dont count do they?) but I know if I were to hit a dog I'd be heart broken. People are stupid and know they shouldn't play/walk in the street but a dog is just a happy animal with personallity. Sorry to hear this happened to you man, sounds like you handled it well though.

BBK didn't help with mine... I swerved to miss and would've done just that but the dog kept running towards me like my bumper was a milk bone.

Same here. My car stops on a dime with my S4 brakes but still wouldn't have helped.

Oh, and I just remembered there was a guard rail along the right side of the road so I couldn't go too far.

Think I figured out a way to fix my fog light. The only thing that broke on it is those two little plastic tabs that fit into the bumper. I think I can plastic weld it. If not, $40 for a new fog light.

man, sorry to hear about that Doug... as a dog owner and lover I'm sure its hard to be involved with something like that. At least you did what you could and stayed there to help the dog. That's a lot more than most people would do unfortunately.
