The car seemed to run decent till one day it started idleing rough.. drove it and seemed a huge loss of power, kind of hesitating.. cleared itself up, so i plugged in the OBD II scanner, and got a camshaft posistion sensor code. Cleared it, went on a 300 mile trip. Never came on, still hesitated a little bit. As soon as i let the car idle for 3 min, seemed like it was missing a little bit, I got the light on again with the same code. Cleared it and went on my 300 mile trip home, never got a light till i let it idle after i got home.. and still felt a loss of power. What do you guys think it is?

yeap. and car misses at idle, loss of power blah blah... but if i clear the code, start driving... no light until stopped, and idling

sounds wierd.....most of the common issues with rough idling on this car is due to coilpacks...but i guess that would show a different code. You might want to get codes read via the Audi Diagostic system it might show something different.......but I think your reader can show cam position sensor since the car is misfiring and can all lead to coilpacks.. Check coils and spark plugs first.

Camshaft position sensor if it was faulty would cause a rough idle at least it does on other cars that I have worked on. I would say replace the sensor...

at the very least I would look into that. The camshaft sensor may be the issue but it very well could be the camshaft tensioner as well. This is a several thousand dollar job so get it looked at before warranty expires. this is not a completely uncommon issue...

Forgot to mention car was a previous flood. Water was about as high as. The seat bottom. Hopefully its just a sensor... Becauuse I dont think the flood could cause mechanical damage as no water was in motor, but with only 18k, who knows. Car is still under warranty until audi checks carfax.. Its at the mechanics right now and if it turns out to be a major problem, more than a sensor then will try audi.

YOu're not going to pay for this yourself are you? I wouldnt want to pay for a cam sensor. That's still a chunk of change. If you have warranty then I would definitely get it to audi. This can end up being big $$$. Hope it turns out well.

    cheers! Mike

Well since it is a flood car, I dont want to risk my WHOLE warranty and take it to audi over a 200$ fix. If they find out it was in a flood, warranty void. If something really major breaks down the road, non flood related, I should still have warranty.

just found out something cam related is 'frozen' causing only 100psi in one bank of the engine. My car is still undetected by audi as a flood car, but im afraid as soon as I take it there, it will be a goner.. they'll pull a carfax on it. this cant be flood related anyways can it guys?

Have you considered perhaps trying for warranty repair and if Audi refuses to fix it, get it in writing from one of their certified master tecnicians that they feel the damage is due to flood and then claim it on your auto insurance comprehensive policy.

I highly doubt the problem is from the flood, but I thought that if there was a flood period(.) then all warranty on the car is void?

so is a timing tensioner and a cam tensioner both the same thing? my mechanic is saying 20 hrs labor to fix the problem.. motor may need to be pulled.

AND also the car has a code for crank position sensor also.. i forgot to mention that, and thats what hes going to try to replace first so that he doesnt have to remove the whole motor.. a 'just incase its that' kind of thing.

Dont you guys think that becasue this car was in a flood, it would be the actual sensor gone bad rather than the whole cam tensioner?

Thats more likely than the cam tensioner. Water shouldnt kill the tensioner but it could easily ruin a sensor.
