Re: need clutch, what to get??

i just got one and so far it seems to be working pretty good. i got the southbend stage 2 with LWFW. it chatters a little bit but its nothing that bothers me at all. i like the pedal feel and the way the clutch grabs is smooth

A lightweight flywheel is just that light, typically 11lbs is what I have seen for our cars. A LWFW is a single mass, solid hub and revs up (and down) quicker because it has less rotational mass. As it is a solid hub, it puts additional strain and driveline lash on the drivetrain. Especially with a turbo'd car, this can be extra hard on the tranny and gears. A dual mass flywheel is two pieces with a sprung hub center. The sprung hub allows the flywheel to take part of the driveline lash rather than putting it all into the tranny. As a result of the two pieces and sprung hub, it is heavier and is slower responding (revs). I highly recommend sticking with the stock DM flywheel, have yours resurfaced when you purchase your new clutch and your good to go!

For Southbend products, contact Jeff ... [email protected]

Tell him I sent you, he will definitely take care of you and IIRC the flywheel resurfacing is included, you just pay shipping, when buying a clutch through him

Re: need clutch, what to get??

^^basically what he's saying is that a LWFW will actually make your car a bit faster. from what i've read they are really quite loud though, and the general preference is to just go with a stock flywheel.

I'd recommend going with SouthBend Clutches through Jeff @ AudiGeeks, he hooked me up nicely. The OFE SS is pretty stiff but not that bad, more like a stock bmw 330i clutch according to Jeff. The FE SS is a bit stiffer and holds more power I think (correct me if I'm wrong Papa). If you want to go cheaper go with an upgraded OFE HD clutch, it has the OFE SS pressure plate and a few other upgrades from the normal HD. The HD pressure is more along the lines of stock though, as is the higher engagement point. This is the clutch I have, and yes it does grab very hard but I really don't like its softness. The upgraded HD is rated to Stage III power though, so it'll still hold when I go BT (hopefully!).

So is the OFE SS hard when you put in the clutch ? And does it catch really high like the stock clutch?

+ 1 on Southbend clutches. 60,000 miles on mine and still going strong.

OFE and FE SS give a heavier pedal than stock and put the engagement point just barely off the floor

Re: need clutch, what to get??

I just ordered mine this morning directly from South Bend, FE SS Stage 4. Should arrive tomorrow (overnight shipping was necessary and sucked!) and go straight into the car with a brand new OEM flywheel. BT transplant will occur in late April/early March with my tax return money !

Re: need clutch, what to get??

Anybody remember if any vendors were selling southbend clutches at waterfest last year?

Also, I'll be buying my parts and taking it a local mechanic to do. I don't have another car nor space to even attempt a DIY. As a result, I won't be able to send my flywheel out for resurfacing and will probably have to buy a new one. Before I do that, I thought I would ask if anyone has found a time effective way around this. Thanks.

12/23/09 - My car has been phenomenal to me. Runs strong. Don't think I'm ever going to sell it. Rather throw $7k into it for a refresh than buy a new A4 that has no dipstick.
    12/5/10 - 100k miles & counting!
    9/22/13 - 146k+ & running strong w/a new TB, water pump, etc.
