    Gas needle acting weird.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I filled up with Gas last weekend, and the gas needle didn't immediatly swing to full, it crept back to full, but took about 30 minutes. also, the "how many more miles on your tank" readout crept up that slow also.

3 days later, I topped off and it seemed to go immediately back up to full.

what would have caused the slow reading???

I've noticed this in my 02 as well.. usually when I don't shut off the car while filling. I think it has something to due with the sensor, since with mine it get stuc sometimes around 3/4 full while on long highway trips..

    Re: Gas needle acting weird.

When the car is running, the needle and fuel consumption value are "averaged" over a period of time. THis is why it slowly creeps up, your average gets higher with time. Otherwise, your fuel needle would move at every bump in the street.
When you stop the car, these averages are reset.

^^ HAHA! reminds me of the 560SEL i was driving for a few days! we call it the oiler for this reason! if u push the gas to start moving ur gas gauge would just move from i.e. 3/4 to 1/2 tank then level out !LOL!

    Re: Gas needle acting weird.

Actually, I think this is due to an issue w/ the fuel sender unit. IIRC, it was something about a faulty wire in the sender unit, try searching AudiWorld. Mine's been doing this every since I got the car w/ 19K miles on it ('02). The other thing is that when the car gets below a quarter of a tank, sometimes the needle just drops all the way and the display goes to 0, even though I'll have at least 50-60 miles left till empty.

I guess many 02 have that issue, for me it's sporadic.

Mine read empty for about 4 fill ups. I had to use the mileage counter to guesstimate when I had to fill up again. Then it starting working again. That was about a year or so ago and it's worked fine since. Just like the sunroof, just a quirk of our cars.

    Re: Gas needle acting weird.

Hey hey, this is my first post, got my 03 B6 two days ago, and today the fuel light came on, even though the gauge still read 1/4 (second red mark - so I pressumed that this was normal for Audis, trip computer still estimated 60 moire Km to go (40miles)
So later today,my GF took the car and went to do a small fill up, just to find out that the fuel light stayed on even after the feel up , she put 25$.
This is how I ended up replying to this tread.

I've read about people repairing Fuel Level senders on B5 - was wandering if this was applicable to B6s.

    Thanks
