    Oil and Brake Question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just took my car to the dealership about 6 weeks ago for the low oil light and my brakes were squeaking. They added oil and told me the break noise was normal. I talked to Audi of America about the brakes and they said there should be no noise.

Yesterday, the low oil light came on again. I took it to the dealership today for the light and the brakes again. They told me that these cars use oil and that is normal for them. They also said that brake noise is normal, but they did what they called a brake modification. The brake modification was just taking the pads apart and cleaning the rotors and the pads. They said that this would help me temporarily. So - is the oil use normal and what can I do to stop the squeaking and the brake dust.

Can't help you with the brake Squeel (never had this issue) nor the brake dust (just part of how they work, nothing you can do about that) You could get a "low dust" pad, but I think the sacrifice bite by using a harder material which creates less dust, not worth it to me.

In regards to oil consumption, my car also consumes oil, I think some cars do more than others, but I also drive REALLY hard ALL the time. I go through about 1/2 quart every 3k miles or so.

I was thinking of going with Hawk brake pads, would that help? I know that I may lose some bite, but I have a CVT transmission, I am not doing much racing.

How much oil are you going through, in what time frame?
1/2 quart per 3k miles isn't crazy bad, and it won't light the "oil" light either.
The oil light comes one when you're 1 quart low, from what I remember.
Most car makers will even claim that 1 quart per 3k miles is "normal", but you could still put in a claim for it and have the dealer check for a leak.
The engine consuming that much oil is one thing, but having it drip everywhere at that rate is not normal.

As far as your brake pads squealing, that IS normal.
Most squeals are the result of the pads setting up a vibration while they are against the rotor. A vibration sets up that causes the pad to vibrate and squeal. There are shims that you can get that are "anti-squeal/vibrate" shims that do work as they stop the vibration from happening. There is also an old trick you can do yourself if you are handy and SAFE. You can use a high temp grease, and you simply put a nice moderate coating of the grease on the OUTSIDE of the pad where it contacts the caliper parts. The grease acts as a vibration damper. It works in many cases. The thing to remember is to KEEP ALL GREASE AWAY FROM THE ROTOR AND PAD CONTACT AREAS.
It seems obvious, but some people are simply sloppy.

If you try the grease trick, you are responsible for it, and for doing it correctly.

The noise is normal in the brakes. If you search on AZ you will see you are part of a HUGE club of B7's that squeal. You should feel Special.

You are right, it is "normal".
However, that does not mean it is acceptable, or not correctable because it is. There is a fix, Audi just needs to do it.
My BMW 3 series didn't have any squealing and it had excellent brakes.
Great braking performance and better overall feel and control, although the B7 brakes are an excellent improvement over the B6 brakes.

There was quite a bit of dust with BMW brakes, just as there is with Audi's.
Proper shims could alleviate much of the squeal.
My A4 brakes only squeal once in a while mostly when cold. Overall, they don't bother me as much as some are bothered.

    Re: Oil and Brake Question

Hmmm, my brakes just started to squeal and I was thinking it odd with only 9k miles. I decided not to worry about it and just pretend I have track day pads. Good question though, thanks OP.
