    Damn Trucks

So I'm headed into work and find myself behind a big dump trucks that is carrying a load of rocks. Of course the trailer isn't sealed all the way and the truck is spewing rocks/pebbles out the back. Before I had a chance to know what was happening I hear my car, front bumper mainly, getting pelted with rocks. I was infuriated!

I got to work and called my insurance company to see if they will cover the damage costs if the cost is over my deductible. Which if it is, they will. I then called a clear bra dealer in Atlanta and got a quote on one of those. For the bumper, headlights, fenders, part of the hood, mirrors and under the door handle its $550 installed.

As soon as the rock chips are fixed...hopefully they don't need to repaint the bumper, I'll be getting one of these for sure.

Dude almost the exact thing happened to me this morning. I was merging onto the highway and stuck behind this damn truck, nothing i could do! The only difference is the truck was carrying dirt not rocks. Man i really feel for you. It sounded so bad when it all hit my car, big huge chunks of dirt were flying everywhere, i was freaking out. When i got to work i look at my front grill/bumper and it is caked in dirt. I am very worried that when i get home and spray off the dirt there is going to be damage...man i hope not

Can't the truck companies cover this for improperly securing their load or anything? Was it covered with a tarp?

maybe... if there was some way to prove that they had done it...also i mean i was so worried about more hitting my car that i flew onto the highway and passed him as fast as possible, no way i was sticking behind the truck to read the plate. the dirt was coming from the bottom, not from the top

    Re: Damn Trucks

I recently took off my front bumper and found a piece of metal by my intercooler. The metal is about 1/4 inch thick, and the size of my palm (originally) mangled to about half the original size. It hit the intercooler duct so hard that it cracked the duct (i didn't even know it happened until I pulled off the bumper this past weekend). It sucks... but I guess it's better than letting that thing hit my hood or windshield.

Not that the dump truck driver isn't at fault but maybe you need to stop getting so close to other vehicles especially trucks.

    Re: Damn Trucks

Dude...I was a safe distance away (at least 5-8 car lengths) and in the other lane of traffic. Its a two lane road and I was in the left and he was in the right. You'd be amazed at how high and far a pebble bounces coming out of the back of a truck at 65 MPH.

And who are you to criticize my driving habits? You've never even seen me drive. It should also be noted that in the 7 years I've had my license I've driven about 130,000 miles and the worst I've done to any of my cars is slide into a guard rail on a bridge trying to fishtail my Xterra while it was 4WD and scratch a rim on my Audi. Knock on wood......

Thanks for making me feel old.

I had my windshield cracked on my B6 the first month I had it. The truck and I was only going about 30-35mph. It was like slow motion watching the rock fall out, bounce, and smoke my windshield.

On the B7, drove by some dude with a grass/weed trimmer. Two little pebble smoked my windshield. No cracks but two divots in the glass right in the driver's eyeline. Car was about a month old too (damn).

    Re: Damn Trucks

I gotta chime in here too. My Passat went through three windshields driving on my daily 25 mile(each way) commute to work. I started driving the freeway with the Audi, but I have since changed my route to a parallel one that has slower speed limits(can you say fuel economy?) and has LESS TRUCKS. Even though I've only had the car for 6 months, the windshield looks like somebody sandblasted it. Throw in a rock chip or 50, and it's destined for replacement already. Thank GOD for the Clear Bra. It was worth every dime I spent on it.

I'm with Teisto, you need to back up a bit. Not just to prevent hitting stuff flung out from the tires (truck tires ALWAYS kick up every particle, no matter how small) but if that truck ever hits the breaks and you crash into the back of it, that solid steel bumper is going to go through you, literally.

Definitely go with the bra, its a life saver.

    Re: Damn Trucks

Same thing happened to me... got stuck behind a truck carrying and spewing grawel all over the road... even at 5-8 car lenghts was getting pelted. It was a one lane highway each way... as soon as I hit a broken line I quickly accelerated to pass him... wouldn't you know it a cop was sitting there on the side of the road behind another car (so I couldn't see his unmarked car) and pinged me... as the truck was traveling at speed I exceed the limit by about 10-20... so saved the car but paid the fine :-(

Like I said, I was in the outside lane, he was in the inside lane and the rocks were coming off of the truck and boucning into my lane. Its not like I was right up on the guys ass just asking for it!
