So i dropped my car off at the dealership today....and

they said my alternator was gone, 2 days ago my voltage meter dropped to 12 and stayed there, i got a new battery, still the same, so i take it in to the dealership today to get a new alternator installed, they called me about 30 mins ago saying, its going to be $950 , then they said my timing belt tensioners are leaking oil, so i said, go ahead and do the 75K water pump/timing service, now they called me back 15 mins ago and said the total is going to be $3200 for everything, now the money part im not really mad at, but has ANYONE! ever had a alternator on a 2004 A6 S-Line with only 67,000 miles on it go BAD??? wtf is that? ... how?

My frieds 2.7T S4 has 130K on it, and same alternator...hmmm i don't know.

Having a part fail prematurely, then raped to get it fixed.. priceless!

$950 for just replacing the alternator! What, did it take them 4 hours to replace it?[O_O]

I have heard 2K for the timing/water pump with misc odds and ends, at Colorado stealerships. So that still sucks, but is close to going rate for stealerships.

You do not want to know, but I just had the timing/water pump, serpentine belt and all tensioners, cam seals, valve cover gaskets, a few other seals, tie rod, alignment, and tranny fluid changed for $1700. $900 was just parts. I usually do my own , but I just got the car and do not have the bently yet. So I opted to have my indy mechanic take care of it so I would be set until I could tackle things as they occur, one at a time.

yeah, my local dealership is a bitch, theres only 2 around the area, and the one i went to is the cheaper one, so i gota find a good indy shop.

Wow, you should have let me know you were gong to the dealer, I would have fedex'd you some Astroglide :)
Just kidding Frank, I feel bad for you. I never go to the dealer anymore, I trust my Indy shop who did the whole 75k service and a new tire for 1500. Their labor rate is $80/hr, not that $80/hr is cheap but beats the 110-130 of Audi. PLus they charge fewer hours.

At least you've done the big service and have some piece of mind for a while.

Well i did get the final bill, it was $2600 , some ass at the garage told me $3400 , but he was off a bit, still $2600 is a bit high for that, so yeah i gota find a indy shop around here, have you guys had any other probs besides this stuff after 75K miles?

My car has 76-77k miles. Did my TB/WP 75k service at 70k last summer.
No problem sunce then from an engine standpoint but did tie rod ends and control arms recently

We're still in surfside. Just went to the beach with the kids for a few hours, good times! Got a little too much sun though playing in the sand :)
