So i when this morning to go pick up a clean 01 santorin blue s4 6 speed got all the papers from the dmv, had the check in hand, etc. So I go to the owners house and as he starts the car to warm it up I noticed there was a lot of white smoke coming out of the exhaust tip. I rev the engine in nuetral and more came out like in small clouds. I asked the owner what it was and he sayed it was from the aftermarket exhaust (BTW the car is has a exhaust neuspeed catback and boost gauge) but i knew it wasnt normal. When The car was first started it smelled kinda sweetish never really smelled something like it. About 5mins later it didnt really smel no more as much and looked as if water vapor was coming out(steam) . I showed my father and put my finger in the exhaust tip and there was a dark brown/black oilish residue in the tips (alot kinda). I showed the owner and he sayed that was normal from the aftermarket catback lol and I was just laughing in my head. He shut the car off and it was still comin out not as bad and I just walked away with the check in my hand. I did some reseach and some people say its a leaking head gasket/ or turbos but i dont know much about these cars. Oh and BTW his coolant was below min. I couldnt wait to pick it up. Now the search continues for another s4 I need a car and a reliable one

blown turbos cannot and will not EVER leak coolant into the exhaust. Not unless the center section castings were cracked in half. Id say headgasket at a minimum.

did you try taking oil cap off to see if any white crap was there?

but anyway, I cant believe the guy would actually try selling it with a problem like that and play dumb, people now days dont care about anyone else but themselves, it is so sad.

his price was orginally 13,500 got him down to 10,000, but the thing was the guy never registered the car. I informed him about that and he sayed he wanted a norgaro blue and he didnt like the color, I asked why did you buy the car in the first place then and he had nothing to say. He prob. knew there was a major problem right after he got it and wanted it gone asap. I feel bad for the next owner of it

I was thinking about calling him and offering him a low price like 4k and putting in k04s but thats not the only thing the car needs it also needs a TB, and a few other minor things. Ill think calling him back, but tomm.going to look at a few s4's hopefully its takig care of and I find the right one

Seriously, you're not going to find a reliable S4. I bought my S4 with 38,900 miles on it 6 months ago, perfect maintenance, owned by a woman, never taken above 4,000rpms, ect....and 3 months into owning it my passenger side turbo grenades, and $8,000 later my car is a full stage 3 with some extra goodies, and I did all the work myself to save money.

black/brown residue could simply be carbon deposits inside the exhaust tips that liquified with condensation..

if the coolant was pink and oil was clean.. might have not been a damn thing wrong with it.

All sounds perfectly normal to me. White smoke on startup is completely normal. Usually doesn't happen if it is really warm out, but its simply a product of the exhaust warming up. Condensation. And my tips have soot on them also. Probably would feel a little oily with the moisture from the condensation. If the car was completely warmed up and there was blue or white smoke after driving it down the highway a bit I would have been concerned, otherwise it sounds like you passed up a perfectly fine car!

No I dont think it was normal after the car competely warmed up for 10mins idling it was still pouring out smokin from the tips the same as when it was first started. I rather not take the chance and just look for another one because it didnt seem normal to me. I seen many other s4's and this is the first I seen like this just didnt realize it till today.

damn. mine does that. come to think of it... ever since the aftermarket exhuast was installed i think. always wondered wth that small white smoke was when you first start after a couple days sitting in below 40 degree weather.

White smoke is normal when on start up a cold/cool day but yesterday wasnt that bad 55 degrees, and after the car was fully warmed up it still smoked the same. To all you guys that get the white smoke does it smell kinda sweetish or is it just water vapor?

The sweetish smell is def something with antifreeze, and that is not normal. Mine doesnt do that at all.



Did you call the guy back at all? I mean I do love Santorin Blue, but if it has a problem and he's not even fessing up to it, then what else could be wrong that he isnt telling you?

I think im gonna give him a call tomm. and tell him about the problem he has, And see if maybe I can knock him off another 1.5k-2k on the price do you think it would be worth it. If it is a leaking head gasket how much to get that repaired in a shop around? and what do you guys think that black oil is in the exhaust tips maybe turbos? there was alot not just a few small drops.

I scanned it no codes except " high resistances on passanger side airbag" I drove the car to drove nice I cant lie turbos didnt whine really but i did think I hear a slight whine at WOT.

When you went WOT, did the turbos kick in?

If a turbo is blown and "lets all the smoke out", I don't think it will boost anymore.

If a turbo is on its way out, it will still boost, but whine like a drill.

hes on orginal turbos at 95k they def were boosting (9psi) he got a boost gauge but ever since yesterday the car seem sketchy to me now. And I know theres a problem with the white smoke from the exhaust.

OK so you have a head gasket issue then and your turbos are ok. Replacing a head gasket doesn't require an engine pull, and is much easier to do during a TB job. If you were doing the work yourself, expect it to cost about $1000 to do both of those things. If you have a shop do it, don't buy the car at all, unless he cuts the price dramatically.
