    A few issues/problems

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm having a few problems with my A4 that I'd like to fix. The first issue is the cloth trim piece above my driver front door is sagging. I have no idea how to get it back up and get it to stay. Is it glued? If so, what glue should I use? The 2nd one is that the mpg calculation in my info cluster does not work right. It constantly displays 5 mpg which in turn screws up my mile to empty calc. Resetting it does not fix it. It's not a huge issue but I'd like to know what my mpg actually is. I'd appreciate any help and sorry if I this has been posted before. I couldn't find it in a search.

    Re: A few issues/problems

    Here is what fixed mine...

    Open VAGCOM
    Go to Instruments (17)
    Measuring blocks (08)

Read last column for measuring block 11. Should be 100... This corresponds to Adaptation Ch 3.

Read last column for measuring block 15. Should be a number from 0-1600. This corresponds to Adaptation Ch 46.

Record the numbers above and go back to the main instrument cluster screen.

    Go to Adaptation (10)...

Ch 03 "Go!" Insert any number that will fit... 95 should be a safe number to use... Then go back and insert the default number that you recorded earlier... This will reset any possible stuck bits. Test, save....

Ch 46 "Go!" Insert any number that will fit... I used 300 as per the defaul in the Bentley manual. Then return and insert the number that you recorded earlier... Test and save...

This is what I did to my cluster as for some reason, something was stuck... Just need to give it a little kick in the ass to get it going again... If you have any more problems let me know!

The cloth trim sagging got me too. I used 3M Weather Strip Adhesive. Worked like a charm.

Thanks a lot Ewok! I will definitely try that out. I'll let you know if I have any problems.

nebone - I wasn't sure how it stayed up there. Glue or snap-in. So I went to the Audi dealership and the shop guy was messing around with it. He ended up pulling more down than there already was so he glued it back up for me free of charge.

01Audi... Just put the 95 value in and save... Then put it back to 100 and save...

Tried this last night but it did not fix it. Still reads 5.0 mpg. I don't know what the deal is.

Sure did. I put the new value in, test, save. I was having problems putting the new values in so I had to close the controller a few times and open it back up before it let me type the numbers in. Could that be a reason?

I can't find out what that code means anywhere. I've tried clearing it and it just comes right back.

    Re: A few issues/problems

Ah HA! That is your problem... Did you recently replace your cluster? If you did, do you have the old one still? You need to recode a couple of other things... One more thing... Give me the soft coding... THEN, go through and give me the measuring block values for the following... Actually, I will give you what the values "Should" be... WRITE DOWN YOUR OLD VALUES FOR THE FOLLOWING ALSO! In case something goes wrong, just revert back to the previous values... (The channels below the measuring block correspond to which adaptation channel they go to.)

    Soft Coding = 02244

    Measuring block 10
    Ch 30 - 128
    Ch 9 - N/A

    Measuring block 11
Ch 4 - 2 (or 1 if you want German displayed in center cluster)
    Ch 3 - 100

    For block 125, you should read 1 0 1 0...
Measuring block 125 - Powertrain data-bus participants (Corresponds to Adaptation Ch 60)
    Field 1 - Engine - 1
    Field 2 - Transmission - 0
    Field 3 - ABS - 1
    Field 4 - ADR - 0

Now for measuring block 125, you need to go to adaptation ch 60 to change these... Really, here in America, you should only have Engine and possibly ABS... So the value you need to enter here in Adaptation Ch 60, is 00005. You may need to add 1024 to that value, for an entry of 01029. That is what it is supposed to be but my car didn't take it. Either way, what you are doing is adding that the engine and abs send information to the cluster...

I am assuming that you have the radio information on your cluster? If not, that will be similar as above but with different values/channels/blocks...

After you have performed the stuff in this post, go back to the previous ones and redo them...

    Re: A few issues/problems

I've never replaced the cluster, however I'm sure it's possible it was replaced prior to my ownership. It was removed for some faulty wiring during a state inspection.

I'll try this out this weekend. Thanks a million for your help. I hope this finally fixes it.

    Re: A few issues/problems

So, another question comes up here... Has the cluster ALWAYS said 5.0 MPG or is it recently that it started?

    Re: A few issues/problems

Well, it looks like the problem is fixed now. My car didn't do anything with 00005 for channel 60 but 01029 worked. That fault code went away after that and then I went and did the channel 3 and 46 change. Took it for a spin and the average is working and the instant is working. The miles to empty is a 0 but I'm at the level where my gas warning light is on so it must just drop to 0 at that point so you get gas. Thanks for the help man. This wasn't a huge issue but it was bothering me.

Everything but the miles to empty so far but like I said, I'm low on gas so I'll see what happens when I fill up. This car fell victim to the undersized oil return line for the turbo before I owned it and the engine was replaced. I wonder if the cluster is the same, it just wasn't synced up to the new engine.

If your MPG gauge works and your fuel level gauge works, then yes your miles to empty will change when you fill... It is an equation from those two values that give your your miles to empty. As for the engine being replaced, that would not cause the code... They would have had to replace the cluster or possilby the ECU for that code to appear... But that IS a code from a replaced cluster...
