VAG is killing me!!!!!!

i bought a cable from someone on here, i got one of those $7 cable deal things, ya so i got a sweet computer set up running Win2000 pro SP4 old computer! so anyways i installed the drivers and all, and when i test the port yes it's the correct one Com 3, and well it says port: ok interface: 0, found, ready! i tried different ports all types of VAG version, and i give up!!!! then sometimes it'll say interface not found, and then sometimes Modem-5! at a meet i used someone's VAG pro, actually Abbott Automotive's one and within a second it all worked, but at home i can't do it, i'm so pissed!!!! any help would be much appreciated!!!

Go into "Device Manager" and look under "Ports (com & LPT)" to see what com port the device installed under. Mine will install under com port 7 some times and there is a simple setting in there that you can change it to one of the 4 that the VAG COM software recognizes.

Word, buy the real vag cable.. you will NEVER have an issue, if you do just call ross-tech and they'll troubleshoot u
Or, if you don't have a laptop then buy a VAD system that comes with a Palm PDA and VAD's cable

older VAG-Com only recognizes COM1-4, this is the XP method, similar in Win2K:

Device Manager -> Ports (Com / LPT) -> Right click one of the COM Ports -> Port Settings -> Advanced -> COM Port Number (choose 1-4 that doesn't conflict)

no kidding i use win2k SP4 on $8 cable serial port stylee and it works great just don't try to use a usb one :)

i have the OBDTOOL.COM serial cable with a usb adapter and able to run the older version of vag with no problem, that is after i went to device manager and moved it off of com23 and put it on com1

FYI:
You will only be able to use the 'shareware version' of VAG-COM with a non-Ross-Tech cable. This even goes for versions 409.1 and 311.2

In other words, you're capabilities are limited, significantly.

My cheap ebay one blows as well. I have no problem with the connection and can retreive and clear codes 100%, but whenever you want to recode something, it almost never will accept the changes.

i said i checked and it is under COM3, and i was using both 311.2 and 409.1. i'm very computer savvy, so i know all this and i've tried it! A4TL did u say that i shouldn't use a USB cable, and rather a serial one??? i'm using a dell optiplex desktop with a celeron i have only 64mb of ram, but i don't think its causing me any probs, everything runs like a champ!

you're using desktop with 64M ram? Just buy beat up laptop.
Also try changing COM from 1 thru 4 (as outlined above) and make sure you match it with respective option in VAG-Com

I got the cheap ebay USB cable, have XP on laptop, got the free software, followed the instructions on the DIY page. Works perfectly first time and every time, check, clear and recode modules no problem.
Sorry it's not working for you. USB cable and XP seem to work well, at least for me.

^^ i think i'm just gonna install WINXP pro on it, after i up the ram a bit, thats what the comp was designed for, i'll give it a shot! i had a laptop my sister's old dell, and my luck it has one USB port and IT DOESN'T WORK!!! needs a new motherboard and the screen is screwed up so all it shows me is a 4inch box in the middle of a 15.4 inch screen!!! i have bad luck, and since my computer's gone, i really can't do much!!!

I assume you're using serial interface, so update to XP won't fix your problem. If you're using USB version, then make sure it's visible in device manager.

Before testing the port, the cable must be connected to the car, with the ignition key ON.

If you have a ebay cable you use 311.2 instead of the 409 one. I bought the $7 cable from ebay as well, downloaded the shareware program and it worked just fine. I use windows xp on an old DELL laptop. but make sure you have it plugged into the OBD port on the car and have the car turned ON before you open up VAG-COM on the computer.

Yes there are serial or usb cables, serial work on old laptops and usb work on newer. Some prefer serial, some use usb with no problems.

ive actually heard of alot of problems with the USB cable having problems with XP, it's a driver issue from what i was reading, sorry no links my crappy dial up and home is too hard to surf and post

What you mean by usb cable not usb interface, if you plug it in in USB port then it is usb cable or cable with usb interface, same thing, unless you have USB-to-serial adapter on it. Either way, if you use USB then you need a driver for it. I don't know where you got your cable from but they should provide you with one. Open device manager and look for USB device that corresponds to your interface. If it's detected then something could be wrong with the way vag-com works with it (I remember some of them have switch or something, look on a4mods for info), also if you have a licensed copy then call ross-tech
