Prices on local muffler shop for flex-back, what to do?

Contaced a local muffler shop that is HUGE in my area. They have done great work on all my cars to date.

Prices are for my 03 1.8T Quattro custom flex-back(will bolt on my test pipe later) 2.5" back to the mufflers

Magnaflow 14851's alum back w/ alum resonator(not sure what make) $350
SS back w/ SS resonator $450

Do you guys consider SS a must?(I'm a cheap ass so $100 would be great to save)

He said the magnaflows were about $110 so I could probably save a few $$ if I got them on ebay for $90 shipped each and didn't have to pay tax either... not sure how they'd like me bringing my own mufflers but I guess who cares if I'm saving over $50

Prices seem good but they don't mandrel bend pipes... plan on staying stage 1+, don't see that I'll ever shell out another $1500-$2000 for a BT.

I really don't want the kid sounding car...something nice and deep sounding with no drone!!

You live on the East coast, the extra money for SS is well spent. You can get mandrel bends on ebay for pretty cheap, then the shop can just cut what they need to make your exhaust.

Sorry to kind of thread jack, but on the topic of exhaust, I want to get the 3rd middle muffler cut off and replaced with a y-pipe that goes to the magnaflows. Anyone know the cost. Seems like a simple job, cut off the muffler - 5 mins, weld the y-pipe, 20 mins max.

    What size?

SS FTMFW. Yes, it's worth the extra coin, unless your gonna drop the audi in a year or two... Heck, even then, 450 for SS iincluding the 14851's is, I think, a great price.

Mandrel bent is nice, a classy, functional detail. I dunno, me, I'm a lazy cheap bastard. I'd proa'lly drop the 450 & be happy to not pay shipping or spend any additional time than neccessary. Balanced against knowing that traditionally you get what you pay for.

The definition of necessary on this topic will also vary depending on who you talk to. Many, perhaps most, would argue that mandrel bent is on the minimum mandatory list.

I just don't see the 1-2 hp being worth it, if your stopping at 1+, for the time/money/effort spent vs 450 out the door.

If your gonna look into the BYO scene, make sure your shop is aware and you have your plans laid out in advance with them.

    No comments on the 1.8 sound. Mine's a 3.0.
