Whoa! Out of the blue, it's a compass mirror?!

Guys,

I thought my mirror was non-compass. Never showed up when I bought my car. Then installed RNS-E. Still no compass. Then, yesterday, I stalled my car, and when I restarted, there was a red digit up there. It was really brief, and then went out. Haven't seen it since.

So it looks like it is a compass mirror, but there was only that once that I saw anything in the upper right. I know it's getting power though, since the auto-dim feature stilll works.

Anyone have any idea what gives?

i think you can turn it on/off and there is a reset as well

since i saw this thread, quick question..Did they come on every model a4 or just usps...If so, how do u turn it on? cant find it in the manual. it says compass but not how to turn it on or off..

same kinda thing happened to me... when i bought the car nothing was there and the dimmer didnt work.. then after i got it tinted ( i had the entire windshield done) it magically appeared... its one of those stupid things that u miss

There is a way to turn it on, with the use of the button on the mirror, I can't remember but I did it for my friend's B7 S4 but it should be the same.
It was never on since he has the RNS-E and it shows on the display, but he wanted it on. I stumbled on the thread, I'm sure if you search you'll find it.
It has to do with holding those buttons for a certain amount of time with the ignition on or off or something.

If it works the same way as in our new A6, you have to hold the button on the mirror down for about five seconds and then it should turn on or off.

Confirmed. If you have the auto-dimming mirror, try holding fthe power button for 5 sec or so. Turned the compass on for me.

Yep, the sensors in these mirrors are garbage. I had mine replaced twice in 9 months. Get it replaced under warranty if you still have one - and they have to replace the entire mirror.

god. my mirror just died. atleast i think it died. the compass stopped working, then the autodim thing stopped working. and my warranty just ended.

I just changed the battery in my car. Afterwords, my mirror quit working (auto dimming and compass) and the headlight switch also quit working (head lights stay on unless I turn off the ignition). I just checked the codes and I also have the 01800 - Light Switch. Is it possible that my battery going dead killed both my light switch and my mirror? Are the mirror and the light switch related?

Come to think of it, I doubt mine does either. I just went to check and got halfway to the driveway before I remembered it's currently sitting on an alignment rack about 5 miles away. I know for a fact I have manual dimming on the rear view though, and from the sounds of things the compass was included on the auto-dimming mirrors. Back to calling junkyards.

I love my compass (and boost gauge ). When I get a rental car without a compass I get frustrated for I loose sense of direction. Esp in a place like PR where the road signs are not labeled.

Yes it does work, just not the way it is supposed to.

Here's the run down:

With the switch in the off positon and the car running, the headlights are on

With the switch in the "auto" position and the car running, the headlights are always on, not automatic.

With the switch in the manual "on" (third) position and the car running, ONLY the ambers are on, NOT the headlights.

I forgot the last two.


And I also just realized my compass and auto dimming doesn't work when I had some lifted truck with blue bright lights shining in my face.


I'll scan and post ALL the codes when I get my front end back on and post them up. It's just a lot of "implausible signal" and "intermittent"
