Blacked out grill !!!!!! (powder coat)

ok so i blacked out my grill and it looks like shit.



my problem is that everyone says they use plasti dip and it works great. problem is that plasti dip has gone out of business and no one sell there products any more, and if they have anything its a yellow or red or what ever.

I have become fed up with painting my grill and i want to get it power coated or at least get it profesionally painted so i dont ahve to worry about crome chip and flake markes. Does anyone know a good palce to get this done in or around the GTA area? or does anyone at least know any good paint that i could use that wont give me any problems.

my car looks and feels great right now and now that winter is over and the salt is all gone this grill isent hidden under the salt anymore and im disgusted when ever i look at the front of my car and embarrassed when ever i drive around. please help!!

Well the first thing I would suggest is not paiting the rings, it sets off the grill once you black out the surrounding trim. As for painting it you just have to do a very good prep before adding the final colour coat. I wouls suggest a slight sanding to rough up the chrome to allow for a better surface for the paint to stick to. Also after sanding cean it all up since with water and soap and apply a few coats of primer first. Then get some plastic spray paint and do like 3 or 4 coats, maybe even more. You wont be able to find plasti dip in Ontario, I have checked everywhere and no one carrie it anymore.

Ya i would suggest primer first than the paint will stick better to the plastic.

But i didn't know plastic dip went out of business....hmmm wonder if theres still some shipments lying around

For all the time and effort, why not just by an OEM one ?? NOt sure if they're available for B5's but I had one on my B6 and it looked the exact same 2 years later (sold it at lease return). ECS sells them ...

just checked it out. they only have the older style grill 97-99 (diffrent flat crome trim) thatis blacked out.....and teh serch continues

hmmm ... perhaps you can find a retailer in the US that has stiock of Plasti dip. Paying an extra $10. for shipping seems easy to rationalize. Good luck !

i didnt use plasti dip. I used the krylon paint from CT works well.

well i found the magic to sanding down the grill. i bough 5 more pieces and im gonna continue sanding tomorrow. this is after round 1 (at teh point of the picture i wasent finshed yet but since the sun popped out i decided to take the picture cuase it was the best for noticing the diffrence. as of now there are zero even slighly shinny parts on the grill





the key to any good finish always relies on the prep

i bought some Plasti-Dip from the Home Depot just across the border, across the highway from the Factory Outlets. just was poking around when the wifey was shopping and picked some up, this was two months ago maybe.

next time you're down there you might want to check it out to see if there's any left

He needs one for the B5. The only one I've ever seen that is made for the B5 removes the center area with the rings, it is just horizontal bars.

Prep work is what will yield results. I have mine done and it has held up well. Sand, prime with a plastic primer, then paint and you should see it lasts much better.

I called home hardware (i forget which one) and the guy said he didn't have the spray in stock, but he could order it and get it in 2 days. I think he quoted ~$11 / can. Call your local HH and see if they can hook you up.

its all over the place all the stores in my area carry it. and it was easy to apply you just have to sand for like 15 minutes before u put it on. it stuck so good to my grill i couldnt scratch it off with my nail even when i tried pretty hard. nevery even flaked its good rubber texture. good luck!

ps i think its plastic so powder coat wouldnt work. or its really bendy metal... anyone know?

you can get it here but it's usually a custom order. it's hard / impossible to find a retailer that keeps it in stock.

just an update on this, i re did my grill over a month ago with proper sanding, primer and multiple layers of paint i got at crappy tire - dupli colour bumper paint, and after 700km so far and a good amount of highway driving still no chips.
