Wanted To Step Up To An S4, couldn't stomach the trade in

I had the chance to drive the exact car I have been waiting for.....a black on black S4 2006. Great test drive, nav, everything I wanted.

I couldn't stomach though taking a 7k hit on the price of my car and I have only had it since last Nov.

I wish it would have worked differently.

Trade-in should never be the reason you can't get the car you want. Period. You ALWAYS have a better option than agreeing to a dealer trade-in - selling it yourself privately. There are an infinite number of reasons for why you should never, ever buy a car based on what you get trading your old car. Do some research and you'll find out that you probably can afford the car, and if you can't, it will absolutely not be because of a bad trade-in number.

I agree ^^. Taking a hit sucks, but I dont think any of us buy or modthese cars because it is the financially responsible thing to do. If you really enjoy it, it makes you happy, and you can afford it, I say go for it. You only live once! Good luck.

    Mel,
Who were you trying to work with University or Barrier? I traded my B6 A4 for B7 S4 last fall at University. Barrier talked the talk, but in the end they fell thru on me and I bought at University.

Well Put! I lost out trading my car to the delaer. I probably could have got another 5k if I sold it privately but it would have taken some time, which I didn't have. Audi's 2.9% was ending, or so I thought so I gave up my S4 at a low price to get the car I wanted at my price with the 2.9%.

In the end, I am not looking back and can say that I am happy.

Actually, I wasn't really implying that he should take a hit or be financially irresponsible to get the car he wants. There are plenty of good reasons to not buy a car. A bad trade-in number on your old car just isn't one of them. With plenty of ways to improve or get around a bad trade-in value, it's really one of the easiest obstacles to overcome. If that's all that's standing in your way of making the purchase, you should be pretty happy because the new car is as good as yours.

when I traded my GTI in for my S4 which was a year old they said i was gonna loose like 6.5k, but I told told them I wanted to max loose about 4k they adjusted the least rate to compensate for the loss on the car. My total loss was 4800. which was close to wahat i wanted and expected so 800 of that was the emotoinal decision

i made $1000 when i traded in my 2004 Acura TL for my 2005 S4. i got the S4 as low as possible but i kept telling the dealer that it was not good enough. the dealer slowly bumped up my trade in value to the point where it was over $1000 than what i owed.

not too shabby, i guess. =)

Plain and simple car dealers are trying to screw you, it's their buisness. They aren't going to roll out the best deal, because there's always another idiot that either doesn't care or doesn't know better. Selling privately is sometimes the better solution, especially if you're taking a 7k hit.

Think of it this way, dealers want to sell new cars and service the rest. They are doing you a favour by purchasing your old beater car. In order to make it a wise business decision and maximize profit they want your car below retail obviously. If you don't like the terms of what they offer, sell it yourself. The price difference is the "hassle factor" you are paying for them to do the selling for you. Any more than 1-2K, and i'd rather do it myself.

do not forget the sales tax factor. you tend to save a good amount when trading in a car. the key thing is cruching a lot of numbers before going there. dealers tend to prey more on people who stop by unprepared.
