    Painters tape

This is a seriously noob question, but is it possible to damage the paint by taping up the entire front end of the car for a 1700 mile road trip, going through hot parts of the country? I'm afraid that the adhesive will melt onto the paint.

... You want to apply 1" wide pieces of tape to the entire front end of your car to prevent damage? If you do get a piece of gravel or stone traveling fast enough to do damage to your paint, its going to rip through a piece of thin masking tape like it was tissue paper. the 3M Bras are a great deal more durable then a piece of tape. If you really care about your car that much, spend the money for the 3M Bra or just take the chance of damage. I think you'll find the tape to be more trouble then its worth.

They're actualy 2" wide, but you do have a point there lol

I didn't want to go the 3M route, because it's a more permanent solution and I don't like the fact that it makes the area that it covers look dull. I figured the tape would help to an extent (wouldn't stop larger stones obviously)...

I have the 3M installed on every car I own, and it actually really isn't noticeable at all unless your standing a foot or two from it, and it looks a lot better then having chips all over the front of the car. It can also be removed if it does become damaged, and most companies offer a lifetime warranty.
