Am I too OLD for this????

I'm posting this thread to prove a point. My wife gives me a hard time and says that I'm too old to be working and modding my car. I'm a 34 year old man and I own a 98 A4 2.8 quattro. With having a family, I don't have alot of extra money to do the modding I would like. But, I do like to keep it as clean as possible and make it look nice. The only thing that I have done is tinted the windows, added a set of 17in wheels and lowering the suspension in a few days. If there is anyone else out there that are over the age of 30 and are still young at heart about their car, SPEAK UP!!!! Discribe your car, post pics or just give support.

Talk to someone that is 50 an up , they will tell you're a baby! Really it doesn't matter how old you are, do the things that make you happy regardless of what everyone says;at the end, life is short and happiness rules.

Your never too old for something like this, the sure thrill of driving your car once you have installed something new is fantastic in its own right. Your wife just needs to understand that, better than going out with friends all night and leaving her and your children at home.

I'm 32, and don't think I'll ever stop being into or playing with cars. In fact I couldn't even imagine not being able to drive, it's what I love to do and without it I'd probably go nuts.

Everyone needs a hobby, and it sounds like maybe the wife needs one.

I'm 60 and just took delivery of a new 2008 S4 Avant. My other car is a 1999 Panoz AIV roadster. The Panoz is my hobby car obviously and I've only had a few small things done so far but am saving up parts in the garage. I have a SCT XCal2 off the shelf tune now, K&N and Redline products all round. When I get the below stuff done, I'll get a dyno tune. Next to go on will be:

2 quart Accusump and Canton oil filter relocation parts
new kv85 Magnecor wires
new Weapon-X coil packs
J&S Vampire Ultrasafeguard
JBA ceramic coated shorty headers (forget long tubes on this car)

and a pair of 135 db Stebel compact air horns (already mounted, have to wire the relays) for the #@$%@#$%%! DEER! around here. Last two cars I've had, deer have hit ME. Both impacts in the side; once I was sitting still. That's the kind of intelligence mother nature provides to an animal that spends a million years stalking shrubs. OK, Rant Off.

My wife and I go to cruise-ins all the time, sometimes to the drag strip, Summit Point. You're never too old to have fun and that's what this is. It's a fun hobby.

I'm young (18) but I know a lot of older gentlemen (50+) who love and work on cars as there hobbies (anything ranging from old school BMW's to Ferrari's to full on race prepped Porsche's) I think it's a hobby that becomes part of you and you are never to old to enjoy it.

Well said, I've been building 4x4's for the last 5 years and just picked up my A4 a few months ago. Very different scene. It's good to know about different kinds of cars though. Cars and mechanics will always be a big part of my life.

Painted lowers, rims, some interior work, mirror replacement, etc. I also just bought a S2000 a few months back that I have so far put a full exhaust, wheels, knob, and full suspension on.....its a bug that basically once bitten you never get over.....I definitely realize that now. I really can't imagine buying anything anymore and not doing something to it...

I'm 30 and of course, funds are super limited. I currently have a 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 that I'm modding little by little but I certainly wouldn't say we ever get too old for this hobby. At certain points in life, priorities do change and mod money can become scarce but that doesn't mean you have to stop being an enthusiast. The other issue is modding your daily driver. Last July, I sold my 1998 A4 that I had dumped about $7k into. That may not sound like alot but for me it was. I did everything on a tight budget but it was all done right. it was Big turbo'd with full supporting mods, wheels, suspension, nice stereo, and a few small low-key aesthetic mods. It ended up being a very nice car but as my daily driver, I couldn't stand wrenching on it all the time. I now have the opportunity to buy that same car back, albeit with a blown tranny. The issue is I just don't know if I have it in me to replace the tranny and keep modding the car. I would like to pull the engine, build it, and go bigger turbo but I just don't have the time right now and of course, I don't have the money. I'm pretty happy with my current car and doing small bolt-on mods as money allows. I'll never be too old to be an enthusiast however there are points in life where blowing big $$$ on cars (modding) doesn't make sense. They key to it all is realizing when those times come up.

I don't have kids yet but when I do, I'd imagine money for mods will become even more scarce. It's all about priorities. Does it make me any less of an enthusiast just because I don't have a GT35R on built 2.0 in my B5 A4??? No, although some people would have you believe that. Some people need to add to the mod list in their signatures just to make themselves feel better.

I will always be an Enthusiast and I will be modding cars until I die. Some of us are willing to make modding a higher priority than others, that's all. Sorry for the mini-rant but to answer your original question, no you aren't too old. If modding your car and being an enthusiast makes you happy then your wife needs to understand that as long as you don't go way out of control with it. You guys need to find a common ground of what is acceptable modding.

Some people focus on their home, their lawn, their boat, their computers, ect. We focus on cars. It's perfectly fine and is no more expensive or time consuming than those others I just mentioned.

I'm 26, so i won't speak as though I'm older. However, I have two friends that are around your age, one is almost 30 with a wife and kid on the way, the other is 32 with ex-wife and 4 yr. old boy. Both are heavy modders and will continue to be. Don't sweat it.

Sounds like I'm not the only one that loves messing with cars. I just wanted to say that I didn't start this thread to bash my wife or anyone elses. She is a great person and an awsome mom. It's just when it comes to my car and others I've had in the past, we don't exactly see things the same way. To me cars are a hobby and I love to change them as soon as I get a new one.

Ever since I started modding cars when I was 16 it has become part of my life. I can't drive a car and leave it alone. It drives me nuts to see another car that looks like mine. I like to be different and that is part of my personality as it sounds like it is with you. My woman likes me for what I am and what I do. She knows that cars are a huge part of life and she had no other choice but to accept me for what I am. She would never ask me to stop because I always make sure all my other priorities are taken care of before I work on my car. Kids are well taken care of as is she. With that said, It sounds like it's time for you to divorce her... J/k but she should support you in all your ventures. Maybe I am just one of the lucky ones.

I'm 22 and I get questioned as to why I mod cars. People can come up with plenty of reasons to question this hobby, but as long as you love it and can financially support it, let them think what they want... though I suppose thats much harder if you're married to said person.
