Car wonders to the right, First audi so need help

    Hi All,
I need your help, I bought my first Audi a 2000 A6 2.7T, it is a grate car and I like it but it has a persistent problem. When trying to drive is a straight line the steering wheel must be turned slightly to the left and when the steering wheel is pointed straight the car will go to the right.

I have had the car allied twice put 4 new tiers on and all to no avail. I know it is not the road camber because late one night I took the car to an empty car park, positioned the car down the center of one of the white lines held the wheel straight and the line moved to the left (car went to the right). I have done the obvious checks pressures, and checked the Tie rod ends, and they are all fine. Any ideas as to what my problem could be?

I noticed that when I turn a corner it also feels like the backend steers a little bit but I gather that is normal with an AWD.

    HELP!!!!!!!

    Thanks
    James

Re: Car wonders to the right, First audi so need help

Car fax said there were not accidents, I am going to write a letter to the previous owner and see if he will talk to me but I will be surprised if he does as he could be worried about me coming after him for the costs of putting the car right.

I don't have an specs from the last alignment I could call the shop and see but I dout they keep records.

Any problems that you know of that could cause it that I could check my self.

    thanks for your help

Re: Car wonders to the right, First audi so need help

OK I called the Audi dealer today (3 in fact). My local one said that the he could diagnose the problem at a rate of $92/hour (The Most I would be able to allow them to spend on it would be 1 hour) and about $120 as it sounds like it sounds like it is a front end alignment issue. Similar things from the other two dealers but they were more expensive. From what I have described how likely do you think it is that the first shop I sent it to had bad/wrong alignment gear and one at an Audi dealer would fix it? (also the alignment was done before I put the new tiers on and one said that I new needed a new alignment due to the change in tread dept on my tiers).
    OK thanks guys

Re: Car wonders to the right, First audi so need help

depending on your location in PA you could make the trip to AWE tuning and see if they can see the problem. Without being able to see the alignment specs it is hard to diagnose an alignment problem. But it really seems to be an alignment issue. But since you already had 2 alignments...

Did a shop that works on Audi's align it? Is there alignment machine up to spec?

If you got 4 new tires installed correctly, they're all inflated correctly, no control arms or tie rod ends are loose, the car wasn't in an accident before, you've had it professionally 4wheel aligned twice, and the car pulls on a PERFECTLY flat road, then I'm not sure what to offer for advice. Let us know if any of the above haven't been checked yet.

There are various reasons to a car veering in a certain direction more. Check alignment (toe and camber pull a car to one side a lot), tire pressures, tire balancing, bad tire, bent suspension component.

Re: Car wonders to the right, First audi so need help

    Hi guys,

sorry for taking a while to respond here are the specs for my most recent alignment (they are all within the specs set by audi). This is the 3rd one since I bought the car but the first once sine I had my new tiers fitted. This was done by my local Audi dealer and it seemed OK when I picked up the car, I have now driven it about 600 miles since the alignment and the pull to the right seems to be back, do you think an alignment could go out in 600 miles?

I am in Lancaster PA so a trip to AWE tuning could be a possibility but at this point I am only going to take it to a place if they agree to diagnose for free and guarantee to fix the problem or they pick up the tab till it is fixed. (have not been able to find a shop to do that yet)

    Thanks
    James

I wonder, could there be a sticking caliper on the right? I'm not sure how bad it pulls but a lot of cars are setup to pull right so if you fall asleep driving you fall into the ditch and not on coming traffic
