Your camera is acceptable, however I think your aperture is slightly high. A higher aperture in lower light leads to noise in the picture. Your ISO may want to bump upto 400 or a bit higher and test it out, though again higher ISO leads to noise as well. The shutter speed is too long, your pics are too bright. I would slow the shutter down to say 10 sec and use an aperture of 5.6 or so ish and re-try that picture.

Running a higher aperture in lower light situations force the shutter to stay open longer. So if you have lower the aperture you can lower your shutter delay. If your looking for one of the pics with all the smeared lights behind you run a higher aperture and long shutter and it will do that. For just shooting a quick snap like you did, do the opposite. Give that a shot and see how it goes. Every camera is different and shooting at night and playing with the setting in Manual mode is what takes time to get right. I know my camera (Olympus E-500 8.1mP) but if I play with another it takes me a while to get it to take really great night shots. Just a learning curve.

Best part is that it's digital and you can snap away.

Here is my avatar pic, its a night shot. For this I used a tripod obviously, it was f 5.6, 15 sec shutter I believe and with my 14-45m lens.

Shooting a bright color at night is really hard especially red because it really wants to give off a lot of noise in the picture.
