    Fuel Pump Going Out?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So recently my car has been making this high pitched electrical sounding whining noise, and I have no idea what is or where it's coming from. When I get out of the car, it sounds like it's coming from near the muffler. Sounds kinda like when you can still hear a TV set on in the other room if you know what I mean. Any ideas?

    EDIT:

    Sounds like this

Failing pump? Can it be solved by replacing the filter?

    Re: What is this noise?

fuel pump, alternator whine, the door lock pump, whoo whoo whistle in your exhaust?

It could be a lot of things. Have a sound clip that might help a bit?

    Re: What is this noise?

Yeah, it stops the second the car shuts off. Sometimes it won't start though, but once it does, it normally won't stop till the car shuts off. I was thinking fuel pump too, but I thought they only made the noise when they were priming?

I could get a sound clip but I really doubt anything I have could pick it up, it's a pretty high frequency.

Hah yeah well the only camera I have is my Treo. If it were the fuel pump, would that mean it was going bad?

    Re: What is this noise?

possibly... if the filter is clogged to the point where your pump is whining then its really starining to push fuel through it. If you pinch a line the pump whines.

Or does this usually call for a new pump?

    Re: Fuel Pump Going Out?

My car did the same thing two years ago. First I replaced the fuel filter, sound/whine was still there. I replaced the fuel pump which is a major PIA w/out the special tool to get the pump back in. I think there is a fuel flow test in the Bentley manual to maybe try next if you do not want to replace it just yet. With a new pump the noise went away.

    Re: Fuel Pump Going Out?

Go in the trunk and put your ear against the floor on the passenger side right behind the seat. If it's coming from there, it's the pump.

The trick to unlocking the pump without the tool is to put two big screwdrivers in the grooves and push. I saw that method in an A6 write-up and it worked well for me.
