rear main seals suck...

well its 4 in the morning and im up because ive been working with two friends on a rear main seal... i have the newer style seal, which is in a one piece housing, and doesnt need a paper seal... the new style has a rubber seal, the old style a paper seal... when you use a paper seal on a rubber gasket, it doesnt seal too well ... so im taking apart the whole deal, just to take off the paper gasket ... the book says 12 hrs to do this, so as you can imagine its not fun lol...

No its not, he just rebuilt his motor and replaced it but the problem is that it did not seal 100% which is why he had to go back in and remove the paper the old paper seal.

that makes more sense. I was confused as to why he didnt do this when he rebuilt it. That sucks man alot of work for a stupid seal.

well i did too, but i didnt know you werent supposed to use the paper gasket... ususally when it comes with the paper gasket and the seal and housing, you put it on lol... guess not this time

we are only 5 hrs in and we have it all out... shouldnt be too aweful, but its just not fun at all

Removing the transmission while the car is on jacks sounds tougher than it actually is. I thought id never be even attempting it. It does take skill and help from others for sure tho.

The new seal is just a rubber gasket between the smooth machined part of the block and the housing of the seal (same type as valve cover gasket). With the paper there, the oil just seeped through it same was as u wet paper with water. It kinda sucked taking apart what Jake just recently built very well.

Ha thats pretty honorable. You should inscribe a diary with important dates on the bottom side of the hood or something.

7 hour job tops and thats if you dont have a hoist and transmission lift.
