I usually take it to about 4k and then slip it a little and the car takes off like it's ass is on fire. It's fun to see your floor mats lift up and bend back. I don't think dumping it at 6k is a good idea unless you have a serious clutch & don't mind breaking some stuff after a few launches.

I rev up to 5-5200 and just drop it with my k03... I do the blipping the throttle technique also but just a straight up rev and drop works fine also

If you set the clutch at the friction point there is less stress on the clutch when you release it all at one time. You dont want to dump or side step the clutch with the pedal at the floor since all this does is cause the pressure plate to bounce off the disk.

I used to drop it at 6k but I would always forget to keep my foot in the gas and thus the turbo would come out of boost and I'd bog lol. I got some nice 2.6 60ft's that way lol...That's when I ran the 14.2 @ ~98-99.

at first I thought that was just a characteristic of a journal bearing t3/t4 50trim (that it would fall out of boost after the launch) but I finally realized that I just wasn't keeping my foot in the gas.

So, after you stage, you "set-it" at the point where it's about to grab? is that what you mean by friction point? While you're waiting on the lights, what RPM are you at? that sounds like a pretty hairy procedure to pull off at the track. it's probably something I'd have to practice to get it right.

by friction point Mike means releasing the clutch pedal to the point where the car wants to start moving forward. I leave my foot on the clutch and the car is almost about to roll forward, i then bring the rpms to about 6k and tap the gas pedal to get the turbo spooling as much as possible, also so that when I release my foot on the clutch, my rpms are already on their way up. I then dump the clutch from that point, keep my foot on the floor until my mph has just about stopped going up so I know I'm not spinning anymore and then shift to second.

If you use the clutch to pull the car into the "stage" light after pre staging you will already know exactly where that spot is at with the pedal, nice part is this also allows you to shallow stage the car by just getting the stage light to blink before it comes on solid.


Once I get the clutch set at that point I start bouncing the rpms to where I want to launch, this helps spool the turbo up. When I am ready to launch I just go WOT on the last down sweep of the tach and release the clutch at the set rpm that I want to launch at. This means by the time I reach that rpm the turbo is going to be producing a good amount of boost.

I have been doing this in my A4 for about 7 years so basically I do it without even thinking about it.

I'm pretty sure what he means by the friction point is where the clutch starts to grab. You can feel it if you press the clutch to the floor and then slowly lift off until you feel the car start to move. That spot between the movement and the floor is the friction point.

This is how i do it too. I think most AWD need to launch this way to keep from bogging.

I pretty much do what Mike said (actually, he advised me on how to launch properly last year and I immediately got much better 60ft. times). My best times were when I dumped the clutch at around 5k RPM (1.895 is my best). My last time out, I was dumping around 4k and couldn't get under 1.90. This is with K04 PC16 on a 034 stage 2 (400+ HP rated) clutch and 18lbs steel flywheel. I typically hold about 3k RPM with the clutch held right before it grabs, then as the 2nd light comes on, I floor the gas and let the clutch out. At a 4k RPM dump, I saw about a 200RPM drop, so I know I need to use a little higher RPM. At the Show 'n' Go...

The only reason i don't like going the all the way to the friction point is because you run the risk drifting forward and redlighting. Using the hand brake makes this a non issue, but for some its alot to do. With my stage 3, i would just dump it at around 4k. Launching at 6k+ is a little much.

Well you dont have to load the car with the clutch, just set the clutch so it is just right below the point of wanting to grab.


The rpm you launch at depends on where the peak tq and peak hp are made. So usually this means a larger turbo needs to be launched at a much higher rpm.

If you were to launch a GT S4 you would need to launch much higher then a stage 3 S4 since the peak tq/hp are much higher in the rpms.

For a quick street launch, say a Mustang 5.0 next to me at a light in the wet. I bring the revs up to 3000 rpm and just as the clutch is starting to grab I release the pedal/dump it as I feed in full throttle. When I get it just right and the car just does a clean quick acceleration with less strain on the drive train IMO. So I guess I just slip the clutch a little.

i know this is old and has a lot of helpful info, but is launching possible in a stock setup? Im pretty sure my car is completely stock under the hood. My buddy in his e36 tells me i can but id rather not risk blowing my transmission, or burning my clutch, or anything else that might go wrong if launching on a stock setup is detrimental. I would only do it on wet surfaces though when first starting to try.
