    Road trip?

So I picked up an '05 S4 the other day. The problem is, the car is in Houston. I don't really feel like waiting for it to be shipped here (around 2 wks), so I'm considering just flying down to Houston w/a friend and driving the car back to NY (1700 miles). The cost of gas and flight for two people comes out to just under what it costs to ship the car. The furthest I ever drove before was NYC-Miami (1200mi) which was pretty bad, and this is even longer. At the same time I don't really feel like waiting for the car to get here...

    Should I go for it?

UPDATE: I went for it. Scroll down for pics.

IMHO there's no better way to get to know your new car than the drive home......my last "3" car purchases have all come from out of state.....with all of them I've flown there.....and driven the cars back home.

nyc to Miami is 1800 miles...if youve done the drive before and are really antsy about getting your NEW S4 (I would Be), then take the drive either just you and a friend or by your self great way to really feel your car and enjoy a nice long roaring sound of your new monster...

Seems like everyone is for the idea, now I just have to figure out a way to get out of work for two days, and borrow my friend's Navi and V1.

Why would you argue the distance when I've actually driven it?

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...25&ie=UTF8&z=5

But yea, I feel like it would be a great way to get to know the car.

Go for it. Maybe bring some painters tape and hit up the front of your new ride with it so you can protect that paint from rock chips and crap on the long drive.

I drove from Alabama to NY straight through in one day and I didn't have any issues at all. The Recaros are very comfortable for long trips.

    Re: Road trip?

It's worth it. I drove a car from virginia to california just because I wanted it sooner than I could ship it. It was worth it, because I got to know the car, and to be honest had it a lot sooner than anyone could have shipped it to me. Just relax and cruise in your brand new car. I did it in an Evo 8, I wish I could have done it in an S4. It would have been a lot nicer .

OK, you guys have convinced me. I just bought JetBlue tickets for Thursday night. Will spend the night in Houston, pick up the car Fri morning and hopefully be back Saturday afternoon.

I'm bringing a Garmin Nuvi 670, V1 and a flashlight...can't really think of anything else I would need...

Been across the United States twice. From San Francisco to Baltimore and Orlando to Los Angeles. It's a very fun experience if you love to drive. Especially in your new ride. Have fun and Good Luck.

Audiobooks are the way to go. Those things kill hours on the road EASILY.

Find a few books you've always wanted to read.

OK, so I made it back Sunday night, without any major incidents to speak of, but there were a few interesting moments. I didn't take as many pictures as I would have liked, but will post the few that I have soon.

    Re: Road trip?

So as it turns out, the gas gauge was off by 1/8 and we ran out of gas in the middle of Louisiana. Except I had no idea that it was gas at the time...we were going about 90 and the car just started to slow down on its own and wouldn't respond to throttle, then the CEL came on and I lost power steering. I barely managed to pull over while avoiding cars coming up from behind. We thought that it was something serious and that we would be completely screwed, because it was late Saturday afternoon in Louisiana, with swamps as far as you could see and the nearest Audi dealer, god knows how far away.

Anyway, after some time trying to figure out what's wrong, we figured it could have just been gas, so we called Roadside Assistance. Two hours later, a tow truck showed up and towed us to the nearest Shell station. Luckily, after we filled up, the car started and we were off...

    Re: Road trip?

Props for making the drive, and that sucks about the gas gauge, I had the same problem with mine. Took it back to the dealer to get fixed and now it doesn't ever read full... lol it only goes to like 3/4 tank when I fill it up, but I'm pretty sure it fills up all the way because it stays there for quite some time. But have fun with the new car!

    Re: Road trip?

First they tried quoting me like $1000 or something close to there for a fuel pump, but then they realized I had run out of gas and just said the "fuel sensor" was broken. [shrug] I dunno. They fixed it for free though, so I don't know what it would have cost. Thanks
