    S4 Engine noise prt2..Vid inside

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Okay, some of you might remember a few months ago, i had a strange noise coming from the front of my engine...Here's the first vid:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrmwNTgab_Y

Now that turned out to be a bad waterpump pulley. It damn near broke off...I dodged a bullet there..[O_O] So I've gone throu and did my whole timing belt/waterpump service.

Now about two months later, I started hearing this noise every morning, when I start it for the first time. To me, it sounds like either my waterpump or powersteering pumps are running dry. I tends to stop within a couple minutes of starting. Here's my second vid:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjTR8yRRaqs

So does anyone have any ideas? I am not low on coolant or PS fluid, nor do I see any signs of leaking. My car hasn't marked her spot since I did my timing belt. The car runs great, no overheating at all.

    is the sound rpm dependent?

does it remind you of this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFXQc...eature=related

sounds like my car, i thought it was my ps pump, so i changed that, the sound is still there. I think its my accessory tensioner that is making the noise. Keep me informed if you find out the sound. Mine was there before i did my tb/wp and there after so it wasnt the water pump.

No it doesn't sound like that, but my car did sound like that in my first video, when my waterpump nearly broke. Thats not your car is it frimmel?

And it doesn't seem to get any louder at higher RPM. So i dunno.

Well that makes me feel a little better. I was really hoping it wasn't gonna turn out to be a bad waterpump.

I will put money that second one is the power steering pump. One mine for some reason, if the fluid is to low or even to high it screams like that.

It sounds like the serpentine belt tensioner but you need to take the serpentine belt off and see if it is still there to be safe. Did you use an oe pump or aftermarket? The aftermarket pumps are total junk. I have seen them go in less then 10k miles. Also I assume you replaced both rollers also when you did the timing belt. Don't let this go though cause we all know it could be really really bad.

I agree, sounds like the serpentine belt tensioner. When mine went it sounded exactly like that. I actually replaced my powersteering pump thinking it was that. Noise was still there and a few weeks later the tensioner failed completely.

turn your steering wheel and see if the sound gets worse or better if so its the ps pump. Mine just went last week! if not ide say serpentine belt tensioner,

Take off your serp belt and try spinning the tensioner pulley. It should spin freely. If there is resistance or it sounds like a grinding bearing, replace it. Then try watching the PS pulley when the car is idling. If you see play in it (movement), then chances are the bearing is going and the pump is causing the noise.

ill try and post up the sound mine is making, but it does sound identical to the second sound clip, my tensioner has been making this noise for about 30k now. guess its time to replace it.

its your secondary air pump humming. its not bad its just loud it works for 1-2 minutes dsuring start up to help lean out your a/f ratio for emissions. thats all.

If he's a 6-speed then he doesn't have air-injection. And I've heard a bad air injection pump and that sounds nothing like it. My money is on the tensioner pulley. It's actually a pretty common problem on higher milage S4's.

by the way. YES it does. 6 speed or not. air injection is an obd2 requirement, its there. its not dependent on what flavor trans you have. this is what i do for a living. and a belt tensioner noise wouldnt go away after a short time it would be there all the time.

    So is my 01.5 6-speed a factory freak because I don't have air-injection?

umm no. 6-speed S4's don't have air injection

I can keep finding more... but you get the point

Oh and yes, if it's the tensioner pulley the sound does go away after a couple minutes. Mine did. Probably something to do heat, metal expansion and the like. When it was just about to die, the sound was there all the time. But for the first month or so the sound would only be there on initial cold starts.

Yes i'm a 6spd, so no air pump. I hope to get some time this weekend to take the front off the car and take a closer look.

    Dr. Jekyll is right.

    rms,
sorry man, but only tips have secondary air injection.

    infinkc,
Definitely change that tensioner ASAP. If it seizes it will likely snap the belt and leave you stranded and calling a tow truck.

No need to take the front off. Just reach down with a 17mm wrench and take the tension off of the tensioner pulley. Take the belt off. Then do as I suggested above to figure out the problem. Maybe try watching the PS pulley before removing the belt though, then take the belt off and check out the tensioner pulley.

Begs the question for how long?
No sai on 6 spds until the late all roads. Of course a serp belt tensioner could make noise and then stop once it warms up. This is the sort of internet advise that ends up with a broken serp belt going into the timing belt cover and taking out the timing belt. Bottom line he needs to check the car or have it checked.
