That is good to know I was about to buy one. The reviews are pretty good, but I guess that does not mean much.

    Re: Radar Detector

Yeah the only thing the GPS really does and is very usefull is you can set the photo rader or something to memory and it warns you than, other than that it is garbage I returned it after 3 hours. I am getting a V1, best investment my buddy made and I really like it. the salesman that was selling me the Escort was like the Valentine V1 is old technology this is new blah blah blah and yeah it was crap sometimes old technolgy should never be touched

    Sure, but a side note on Jammers;

I used one to compliment my V1. Well every time my V1 warned me, then my Jammer jam'd the cop, even though I passed the cop doing the speed limit b/c the V1 warned me ahead of time, I still get pulled over cause the cop couldn't get a solid read on me (thanks jammer). I never got a ticket from this, but getting pulled over EVEY time with a situation like this (happened about 8 times within a year) got old, so now I just run a V1.

    Re: Radar Detector

There are 3 main top tier radar detectors. Valentine 1, Escort 8500 (9500 if you like the location lock feature) & the Bel STi Driver.

Personally i went with the Bel Sti Driver and added a Blinder Extreme M25 laser jammer. Both have worked excellent. I had a V-1 and i really liked it, but i prefer the filtering of the Bel STI Driver better. For me the V1 was just too chatty. There is a switch on the jammer to turn it off once you correct you speed to not throw up too many red flags. Jammers made by Lidatek actually cycled 'on' for 4 sec and then off till targeted again.

    Bel STI Driver Link

    Blinder Xtreme M25 Link

This is not the cheapest combo, But i like the protection and the filtering.

I've got two buddies that have the RMR detector/jammer...

We were out tuning one night...only car on the road... Got pulled over, and the cops exact words:

officer: "do you boys know how fast you were going?"
driver: "not sure, I was paying attention to the road"
me (on the laptop): "if you give me a minute I can bring up his last pull..."
officer: "well boys, according to my radar, you were going zero...any ideas why that is...?"
driver (with a contempt look): "...ninjas..."

    moral of the story...it works...

    Re: Radar Detector

I use the Beltronics Rx65 detector and the Laser Interceptor laser jammer. You guys should really check youtube and google. There is a lot of info on this topic. The V1 is preferable for those guys who live in the middle of nowhere or those who live in Florida, Texas on and other flat states. Don't be surpised if you get a detection range of 5-8 MILES out of them. Detectors of choice are usually the V1, Escort (9500i,X50), and Beltronics (STi, Rx65) and anything else from Bel or Escort. As far as jammers, the best right now in no particular order are LPP (Laser Pro Park), LI (Laser Interceptor), ALG8 (Anti-Laser Guardian 8). Lidatek, Blinder, Bel/Escort also offer systems that perform pretty good but are less effective but they are FAR MORE RELIABLE than the 3 top performers I've mentioned. Check the website www.GuysofLidar.com , www.radardetector.net , and www.Radarreviews.net. <--Plenty of info on those sites. Don't take everhting for face value either because there are some BS'artists out there pushing products like LaserStar and Laser Mimic, Laser Deceptor and other crap. Observe how they test and their results for other products that generally perform well. If they are getting crappy results for products that usually perform pretty well, run far far away from them.

PS- Rocky Mountain Radar is hot garbage!!! If I were you guys, stay away from that crap. It has been known to cause radar units to lock your vehicle at 80+ mph while you were really cruising at 35 mph.

^^x2. That's what I did with my radar detector in my GTI. I clipped off the 12v charger and used an "add-a-fuse" in the fuse box. I hid the wire up the A pillar and down into the fuse box.

edit: I've heard great things about the V1. If you have the money, K40 kits are really nice.

escort 8500 ftmfw. i love mine to death, it's saved my ass time and time again.

it's one downfall is that it's still detectable.. (yes - they give off their own signals, and cops CAN pick that up) if you've got the $$ the new 9500 is supposed to be totally "invisible" and the GPS stuff to eliminate false alarms is AWESOME.

The 9500i or ci is NOT invisible. The only detectors that give off no leakage are the Bel STi and the STi-r. But they do not have GPS lockout built-in. So you guys in Canada and VA can use the Bel STi and STi-r without worrying about being detected.

A few guys had the bright idea that in addition to your regular detector, you should carry a cheap $29 detector in Ontario or VA. If you are stopped for the suspicion of using a radar detector in these areas, give the cop the cheapy $29 detector. Using a detector in these areas is a 0 point non-moving violation. The fine isn't that bad either. The cost for reckless driving (85+ mph in VA or 151+ kmph in Ont) is liscense suspension in both areas, up to $1k fines in VA, up $2K in fines and your car being towed on the spot and impounded for 1 week in Ontario. Do the math. Detectors are your friend.

I agree with all of this except the only thing I did differently was returned my Valentine 1 for the 8500 x50. I found the V1 to be worthless because of it's high number of false alerts. What you dont want in a radar detector is one that goes off so frequently (often showing 2 to 6 bogies) that you end up having to look at their little tiny illegible LEDs to determine band and then look at the distracting arrows BEFORE you trust that it's a real alert and apply the brakes. This is way too late. You should be able to trust the radar detector so the minute it makes any chirp you just jam on the brakes. The 8500 fit that bill. The v1 did not. I dont miss the arrows at all. The first thing you should be doing is braking...not looking at arrows. If you stare at the arrows then you are wasting valuable time and one or two seconds may be the difference between slowing and them getting locked on.

get the v1, imho, the best you can get.

the 8500 x50 is also very good (my second choice).

For those who are saying the v1 is too sensitive, thats what i love about it. you can lower the false alerts to pretty much zero by doing a few things.. like turning POP off.

    Re: Radar Detector

ive had two escort passport 8500 x50's and they have both crapped out on me in a year or two... i love the sensitivity of them and the fact you can turn off the X band which is all junk stuff.... however i just got a V1 and its also very sharp at picking out cops and its very very nice to be able to see the front/rear direction of the radar especially at night!!!

    v1 for the win..

V1 FTW !! You can turn off X, K, or which ever you want, free OS updates, comes with hardwire, and last but not least the Arrows!!

8500 is also great (me second choice).

Bel RX65 pretty good not a lot of false alerts. Go on the net and look up Radar Roy they did a comparison test on all of the top brands.

    Re: Radar Detector

I'm pretty sure that there is no bleed on the V1 either.

they didn't use the same terminology to explain it as you do, but they got that point across.

Also, although its an advanced feature, you can program the V1 to act how you want it to.

I've had one in my windshield for 4 years and I love it. if you keep it in your line of sight... IE, directly until the rear view, you don't need to use the sound unless you're really hauling ass.

Detectors are your friend.
maybe i misread an article that i saw on the 9500, i just could have sworn that i read that it was totally invisible to other detectors. oh well - still way too much money with my 8500 works just fine.

the $29 detector idea is pretty good... might have to do that for my next trip through VA just incase. also, i thought i remembered reading that they passed new laws in VA saying that they can confiscate (indefinitely), and even destroy your car should you be exceeding certain speeds.
