    Brake upgrade-final questions.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I did a bit of searching on the brakes, but I have read some things that give me second thoughts.
Plans: Front-A8 rotors, TT carriers Rear-Upgraded Disc and pad.
This car is a DD, occasionally it sees some spirited driving, and I am taking it to the track soon.
I was reading up on a thread from a while back regarding plain rotors vs slotted, etc rotors. I really want the look of the drilled and slotted rotor, but I dont want to loose performance either.
Should I still get the A8 sized rotors for the front that are drilled and slotted? (I realllyyy love the look)
and for the rears, will it just be fine upgrading the disc and pads?
I plan on buying some TT carriers separately and getting those custom discs made by Adam @ SPP depending on the outcome of my decision.

    Re: Brake upgrade-final questions.

I think the closest size ratio between the front and rear is with A8 fronts and rears, I think that combo will affect brake bias the least based on many different rotor sizes; B6 A4 3.0, S4, C5 A6 2.7TT/4.2, A8, etc. That is 312mm fronts and 269mm rears.

I also like the look of slotted/drilled rotors, but I would stick with blanks.

    Re: Brake upgrade-final questions.

You will be fine with that setup. If you read some of the posts on here you will see that quite a few people have noticed considerable brake pulsing with drilled rotors because the holes fill up with pad deposits. Cleaning them out will help, but it's a pain.

I'm acutally putting the 269 rears on in 2 weeks. In terms of size and proportion, unorthodoxA4 has it right....it's a mathematically correct match. I'll let you know how it goes. Oh, btw.....the A4 and A8 braking systems are the same on every part except the booster....meaning, you could swap all the parts from one to the other and have no problems.

    Re: Brake upgrade-final questions.

Does it matter what year the TT carriers come off of?
I found some from a year 2000 locally.
So, 312mm for the front with TT Carriers, and 269 for the rear with stock?

    Re: Brake upgrade-final questions.

I have the A8 TT upgrade with ceramic pads and slotted rotors. If I did it again, I'd get blanks. The brakes stop great but the pulsing/shudder is annoying.

    Man, this sucks. haha
I reallllly want the look of a slotted and drilled rotor.
I know that I should be going with the plain, but my thoughts keep on getting dragged to go with the nice looking rotors

    Re: Brake upgrade-final questions.

If you want looks and are willing to clean your rotors 2-4 times a year and don't mind feeling like your rotors are warped, go with drilled slotted. If you want pure braking performance gain...go plain.

Hawks are ok....I found they made too much noise and too much dust. PBR Ceramics all around

TT carriers up front. A8 2000+ Rear Carriers for the 269's. Check Car-Part.com I found mine from a yard in CA. You'll have to call and ask if they have them in stock.

    Re: Brake upgrade-final questions.

^More than likely. Any depression on the surface of the rotor is going to pick up deposits. Dimples might be less than slotted, which is less than drilled, but if it's for looks and it's a DD, then it's really not worth it. You'll never heat up the brakes enough to make the drilling worth while.

oh....right.....if you're going to do the 269 rears, you're going to need S4 rear calipers. And no, the rear calipers from the A8 you get the carriers from won't work.

    Re: Brake upgrade-final questions.

    my 2cents:

-get slotted rotors, i have no issues with pulsing, and they wipe the pads clean so they never glaze...drilled rotors are just a liability.

-replace the rubber bushings and sliders in the front caliper for a complete job. sloppyness in the stock setup is due entirely to these parts.
    rubber bushings: 4D0 698 547
    sliders: 251 615 219

-as for the rear upgrade, i did the A6/B6 255x10.
