Thought you guys should know...

My house I was renting in OH went up in flames Sunday evening. We had an accident in the garage with a fuel system and it got out of control really fast.

I'm not pointing any fingers, or even getting mad. I was in the garage when it happend but it obviously wasn't intentional.

Losses: My roommate's pride and joy, the first car I could say that I seriously had a hand in building, a '99 C5 Corvette FRC. Fully rebuilt car, everything from the Z06 trans, steering rack, full internals, heads, .... made over 430whp and 410tq. Now it's a bare chassis and a roll bar.
I lost my motorcycle, some tools, my AutoX tires, and so much more I can't even think of yet.
one of the other guys lost his motorcycle and the first B5 that I owned and sold to him. Neither of his vehicles had insurance, and both titles were lost in the fire.
Out of all of this I was the only one that didn't loose everything I own. I managed to save all my clothes and I think my electronics.
So 3 out of 4 people lost all their clothes and almost all of their belongings.

Most importantly everyone is out alive and unharmed, other than the obvious emotional ties to the vehicles lost.

I'll post pics as soon as I can get them up, but it will probably be awhile.

I'm not going to be able to respond as much as I used to, at least until June, when I move back to MI. My advice is to buy fire extinguishers, and make sure they're inspected.

The owner's insurance only covers the building and none of it's contents. The Vette is covered by insurance, the owner of my old B5 and the ZX6R didn't have insurance on anything. NTM lost the titles to both vehicles.

out of the 4 college students that lived in that house, none of us had renter's insurance.
Thanks for the offer, I'll be back up in GR in June after graduation. I might have to take you up on that. After fixing my rear diff and CV's in my parents' garage, I've learned the difference between a true DIY'er and a guy w/ some wrenches.
Good things will come of this, I'm simplifying my life, and I don't have a bike payment at this point. Being that I'm unemployed until June, that's a good thing.

my buddies parents garage burned down a few months ago. It killed their old couger, comet, 2 harleys, their boat, 2 of their cars,and my buddies jeep....plus like thousands of dollars in tools and equipment. These fires can get out of hand and spread fast. glad you guys are ok though. insurance ftw hopefully!!

Are you sure about that? Because home owner insurance should cover what is in the buildings that it is covering which is why insurance companies tell you to keep all your records and even a photo record of everything that is of value. This is why people usually put those important papers and data in a fire proof safe.

If the person had titles for the cars they can just go back to the DMV to have new ones sent to him since they keep a record of them.

Good part is that no one was hurt.

Or if it is a rental. Landlords usually protect what they own and draw the line right there. The tenants are liable for what they own. This keeps the landlord's insurance simple and relatively inexpensive. It also allows the tenants to purchase the insurance they need and nothing more. Some have almost nothing whereas others have multiple cars, toys, electronics, and other big ticket items.

If you check into your homeowners policy you'll probably find that it covers contents up to 15-30% of the home's agreed value as long as there is some proof of ownership. If you have that rider removed it will save a nice chunk of money but you would only do that if there was some other form of coverage.

Sorry for the delayed response again. My Parents' Home owner's policy is going to cover about $5500 of the loss on my part. Their policy is written so that a rental property is covered for up to 5% of the value of their "contents" coverage.
Progressive is giving me some $$ towards the motorcycle too, unfortunately the bike only had ~47miles on it. NADA doesn't care about that though.

So it was a car that caught fire? I would have pushed them out of the garage. But I'm sure you didn't have enough time to react or were even able to think of doing that, if at all possible anyways.
