    B5 2.8 transmission

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just to let everyone know, the B5 2.8 transmission bolts up into a B6 A4Q. Did the swap last night, only have to change two parts and both can be done without any special tools. This would also apply to using a B5 1.8t transmission. This is so those of you who destroy your trannys don't have to go out and spend retarded amounts of money to replace it. ( manual transmissions ) Any questions just ask.

    Re: B5 2.8 transmission

that is so funny that your saying this. Ill be taking pics of this in the next week or so. How do the longer gears feel?

So did you just swap the hubs for the axels, and the rear diff? That should be it

Yes. It is being machined and assembled as I type. The head is following a little behind the block. I'm guesstimating full 2.0L tune in June or July. Got a lot to do once I pull the motor since everything will be out. You guys will know once its running. Trust me..

    Re: B5 2.8 transmission

I've been told the rpms are about 3100 @ 80mph by the owner. Talk about long gearing. I wonder how highway fuel economy will be affected. I'm guessing it'll be close to that of the 6speed.

PS - Anyone check the price of a 5 or 6speed B6 1.8T tranny in comparison to a B5 tranny? You would easily see why the B5 option is a little more appealing to some.

Gruppe5, good work and Keep it real.

Plus the fact that we already know the B5 1.8 and 2.8 trans can handle huge amounts of power while the B6 1.8t trans seems to be a bit weaker.

from that table, the b5 1.8T also has longer gears then the B6 . . . that's interesting to know.

looks like our 5th is similar to the 2.8's 4'th. I'll keep this in mind for future upgrading.

    Re: B5 2.8 transmission

I had to change the axle flanges, which are pressed out with the bolts that hold the axles to the flange, and change the CENTER diff housing. This is the rearmost portion of the transmission, attached with about 10 bolts or so. This provides the third mounting hole for the bracket that hold the transmission on the B6. Final drive for all B5 and B6 A4's is 3.89, the 4.11 gears came in the B3 Audi 90 and the B5 Audi S4, some others as well but thats irrelavant. If the choice comes up why would anyone pay typical asking prices for the B6 transmissions when the B5's are up for grabs for $350. They are ALL the 01A transmission (except for the 6 speed ) they just have different codes and ratios but the same final drive.

    Excellent!

That is good to know. Looks like I'm putting a 2.8 5spd in my car. It'll fix my blown syncro issues and also get a taller gear for the highway (which is all of my driving).

    Sweet! Thank You.
