Oxygen sensor gone.

Got a CEL about 3 days ago, finally got around to the bridge auto parts today to get it checked with the OBD cable. Anyway, he said my front oxygen sensor is gone. I think the front was $165 to replace and the back was something like $48 to replace. Then I need it installed. He said I might as well get both replaced while i'm at it, but i'm on a minimum wage budget, and idk how I should handle it really. How long can I go on this broken sensor until I can save up ? Is it an emergency or can I let it sit for about 2 weeks ? Can it cause any problems while its down ? Just curious, I wasnt expecting a code like this but I guess its good that its nothing worse. TIA for help.

ECS Tuning has 02 Sensors for around $115...don't spend $160 thats really high!

With a bad 02 sensor your car will either be running lean or rich, and neither of them are good to do for a long time. If you need to wait a couple of weeks to get the part you should be fine, but replace the sensor as soon as you can to be safe.

It is recommended that you change out both 02 Sensors at the same time. When you only replace one, it will be sending a clean signal through the catalytic converter and when that signal gets through the second oxygen sensor (old one) will interpret it differently, probably not as well because of its age. Overall the signal will go from clean to dirty....this isn't good for your car.

my rear one just went out as well.. dealer quoted me $198. i told him i could get it at ECS for $115 he said well $198 is our cost... yeah right i told him... the rear is just a check so im not going to do both...

Yea I'm gonna get the rear from the autopart store for $50 (as long as you dont need to get both to pay $50 for the rear), and get the front from a friend who's getting me a discount from some other place.

I'd also try to make sure the 02 Sensor you end up getting is made by Bosch, or OEM at least. I think the OEM sensor is already made by Bosch, but I'm not positive. Just don't get a knockoff brand, stick to the tried and true.

On my B5 A4 the 02 Sensors went at like 84K miles so this should be a normal maintenance replacement part for you.

You should be able to get in there (once your airbox is removed) and replace the two O2s yourself. I think a 7/8" open end wrench works if I recall correctly.

With the SAI system installed you might have to get the lower O2 from underneath the car. I can't fully recall since my engine compartment is missing a ton of stuff back there.

make sure its the O2 sensor. could be a vacuum leak. i had mine scanned at AutoZone once and he said it was my bank 1 running lean which means my O2 sensor is gone. i found a vacuum leak, fixed it, and it was all good.

why dont you just get a testpipe and get the cat delete file?

Quick question, i wasn't really clear on this... I know i need to replace at least one of my O2 Sensors but im not sure if its the back or the front or both... I want to do one first in the interest of saving time and money. Which one should i replace first? Is it most likely the pre/cat one since the post/cat one is just a check? Mechanic says i should do the back one first. Which one should i order?

Well, im gonna have the mechanic do it anyway, he is gonna do it for free because I paid him to replace my MAF when i dont think that was the problem, it was the O2 sensors the whole time. So i figure i would order the Sensors from ECS and have him do it I just dont know if i should order the front or the rear sensor.

yeah, test pipe/cat delete still utilize the o2 sensor readings it just wont through a CEL... i think he misunderstood what a test pipe and cat delete file do

I'm coming up on 95k miles (now @ ~147,500 km) and don't know if my O2 sensors have been changed or not but wondering if they were crapping out if that could cause my intermittent underboost issue (I now notice it only comes on when I'm driving normal and then all of the sudden punch it. Then it goes away after I drive nice for a while).

^^if u spike lets say 19 PSI and only hold 12 PSI at 5k then ur 02 is most likely bad, the dealer explained to me that it feels like the boost sometimes isn't there!

When you say "Gone" as in, it is not physically there? If so, you need to get something to plug the hole. If it is there, then you will just get crappy gas mileage.

If you are on minimum wage (no offense) what are, you doing with a car you cannot afford.

Unfortunately I have to drive daily and it says sporadic and it goes off but then comes back on after a week give or take, so hopefully i'm not damaging the car. Its either, MAF, O2 sensor or something else.

or your cat going bad, but since 02 sensors are cheaper, we typically replace them both first, then if you still get the CEL after 100miles after its reset, its your cat.
