    Suspicious RS4 ad on eBay?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Does this seem suspicious to you guys?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2007-...3597#mainImage

Says private seller, but photos look like they are from an Audi dealer lot. "I will sell for $35,000. Please contact me." Just phishing? Bidding is already >$35k.

    Cheers, Ian

It happens all the time on eBay...... accounts get compromised via phishing so that these scammers can use accounts that have been established and/or have good feedback so unsuspecting buyers/bidders are more apt to believe it's a legit auction and go through with the purchase and/or at least send a deposit.

Unless it was a "buy it now" price of $35k, doubtful its a scam. I'm guessing the seller knew the car is worth considerably more and was stating a "low reserve" to get the bidding started. Then again I'm a trusting soul so

Other than the price it looks legit. Without checking it's probably worth $55-60k. Tempting to bid on it....

Happened to me just recently. They changed my eBay password and email password so I couldn't access either one. Luckily, eBay caught it and placed the account on hold before they could do anything. I was able to regain access to eBay and email accounts and change my password. Luckily, no harm was done.

Yeah, but did you list it as private sale or dealer? Could be the guy works at a dealer and is just selling his own personal car.

I bet this is exactly what's going on. That's what happened with the blue 07 S4 that was recently listed with a buy-it now of $25k.

Re: Suspicious RS4 ad on eBay?

OK - this seems to confirm it is a scam. It proviously had been bid up to $40k, in excess of the reserve. Now it's at just over $3k with reserve not met:

Re: Suspicious RS4 ad on eBay?

Bidding was at $40,100 for a while, then it suddenly dropped down to just over $3k, with 18 hours to go. My guess is that the account is hi-jacked and the hi-jacker is pfishing for other user accounts. If you look at the bid history, you'll see that a number of the earlier bids were cancelled with "Please contact me for more information".

The "seller" had a handle with a dealership's name. I googled the dealership, found the phone number and called. It turns out it's a a 50 year-old franchise with eight dealerships. I spoke to the manager about the auction and he explained someone hacked into their computer system and hijacked their ebay account, posting a number of bogus car auctions.
