Has anybody done this, that's the only thing I hate about having a manual transmission. It sucks sitting on really cold or really hot leatherraint.

Hold on, I just did a search and there is no thread related to remote starters on manual transmission cars. Back to my original question, has anybody do this?

I haven't done one on an A4, but I've done quite a few other MT cars over the years... What specific questions do you have?

Ok, I found a thread that touched on and a few people said they've done. So, does require special wiring or is it just a matter of finding a shop that will actually put it on a manual car?

The big thing is to have a safety device that knows when the car isn't in gear and the e-brake is on.

What about the whole having to depress the clutch to start the car thing?

    Re: Manual trans, remote start?

some systems are built just for manual cars. I have a ultrastarters u2256m which has a load of features like a turbo timer mode where it lets the motor cool down after you have locked it and left. I got it for a different car but then sold that car, never put it in. PM me for more info...

Bypass the clutch depress and then just always park with the car in neutral with the pbrake on. some remote starters require you to hit two buttons at the same time 3-5 times. that could help you not accidently turn it on. finding the right wires to tap into in the harness is probally to hardest part if your DIY

    Re: Manual trans, remote start?

you'll need a relay setup to bypass the clutch switch. Some cars have 2-3 separate switches, you'll need to find out with one(s) are the winners. Most remote starts have a line to tie into the e-brake signal (easy), and I used that same lead to tie into the shifter linkage with a magnetic contact that would open the connection if the shifter was in any position but neutral. I also took it one step further and added a second shock sensor that was only active during startup, and de-sensitized, to the point that it would only register if the car lurched forward during an attempted start in gear (testing it was interesting to say the least...) The install itself isn't very complicated, but it all depends on what level of safety you're looking for. There are some remote starts designed specifically for a manual trans car, but I really don't like the way they account for the car being in/not in gear...they can be faulted quite easily...

someone already mentioned it...but it's tough to find a shop that will actually do it for you.

That's what I was worried about. I really don't have a problem wiring things myself, but everyone I talked to has told me not to even try an alarm, its way too complicated.

    Re: Manual trans, remote start?

More complicated than installing a regular alarm/remote start. 3 more modules that you need to install. 1st clutch bypass, 2nd antitheft bypass, 3rd Gear selection sensor.

Best Idea - Go somewhere that will install a Compustar for you.

Mine works great. About a mile starting range with the remote and the option for internet remote start. (Yes you can remote start your car anywhere you can connect to the internet)

    Re: Manual trans, remote start?

It is no more complicated then instaling a regular one on an auto car if you get on that is specally for a manual car. The one that I got what you do is......
tap the brakes twice quickly wile stoped
Then the parking lights will flash so you know its engaged
Then you get out of the car lock it and walk away
    The car continues to run

The reason for this is if the car now that you opened the door and then closed the door and locked it then it knows your not in the car and if the car is running it must be in nutral because there is no one inside to be holding the clutch down.

    then it shuts off

So when you press the start button if none of the doors have been opened then the car knows its still in N so it starts.

also this remotes send a continous signal if you hold the button down so it should work with the vag com windows mod.

The compustar came out a year or so after I did my first one (back in 00 if I recall), What I didn't like about their method for insuring a neutral gear... if you have a faulty door trigger (dsms are notorious for them), someone could open the door, put it in gear and walk away. if it's a convertable, you could reach in and put it in gear. (this next one I haven't tried, but thought of) is if you have the alarm in valet, unlock the door via key, put the car in gear (think kids playing), and get out...

I'm nit-picking here...but when I was an installer, these were the things I thought about... same with security in general...traditional alarm installs are easy to disable...but that's another discussion we won't get into here.

You should be able to find a compustar dealer that will happily install one on your car with no qualms, I'm sure they've sold thousands over the years...This could very well the be answer to your original question. I'm sorry for muddying up the thread playing devil's advocate...I'm just a tech-nerd that's done this for too long...

    Re: Manual trans, remote start?

I had an AutoStart 2450 installed this winter on my manual. They had to bypass the clutch on the start and tie the engine kill into both the brake and e-brake. autostart makes remote starters specifically for manuals too, so follows is the "safety feature". When im parked, with my foot on the brake i have to engage the ebrake, then release the foot brake. hold a button on the remote start for a second puts it into Ready Mode. Remove key from ignition, get out of car, turn off car via remote, lock doors. The car can now be started from the remote, as long as you do not open the car doors before you try to start it. People with automatics might find the extra steps a pain in the ass, but its worth every penny when it gets down to -15 here in minnesota.
