Noob coilpack question

I just picked up a 2003 3.0 avant.....i hear so much about coil packs and stuff, and just wondering what the car does if there is a bad coil....lumpy idle, and shaking car, and missing? what are the best replacement coils for the 3.0? how do you know which one is bad? thanks in advance, and sorry for the silly questions.....

bad coil pack= shaking car and flashing CEL.
You can find it by either scan car with vag com to see in what cylinder is the misfire.
Or some swap one and see if the car sounds worse or not.

mine where going bad and only threw a code and CEL one time, mine only acted crazy under load, i replace all of mine for 127 bux from autohausaz

what about a "half bad" coilpack?

i had the shaking car / misfiring / cel thing happen to me, so i pulled over. i got the spare coilpack outta the trunk and was going to play musical chairs with the coilpacks when i couldn't get it to happen anymore.

i put the spare back in the trunk, and drove home. just fine all has been well, but i *occasionally* lose some power under load, and *occasionally* have a rough idle, and i can't help but think it's coilpack related. (most of the time, car runs normally).

i don't have a vag com, so is there an easy way to isolate a "half bad" coilpack?

no, thats why i replace all of mine at the same time, i had the exact problem, light came on ran like crap, pulled over running smoooth, cleared the codes, driving around a few days and under load i would occational feel it start skipping see the cel try to flash but then all smooth, no codes, so i replaced all 4 and not a problem since, other than the crappy 21mpg all highway driving :*(

This is going to sound silly i am sure....but How do you replace them?? anyone have a picture of the 3.0? and a discription at all??

The coil pack problem is not as chronic on the 3.0 as it is on the 1.8t. i wouldn't worry too much about it, but maybe keep one in the trunk. I want to see some pics of this new Avant!
