    popping noise?

    got a popping noise in 2nd and third when coasting in gears...or when whinding down...sounds like rocks in the exhaust pipping..wasnt that...replaced both cats...not those..got new muffler..not the answer...its a distinct popping noise...and its the same everytime in the same gears...it doesnt do it when reving in neutty either....help me out guys

    sounds like its just the unburnt exhaust gases popping...

    Is the vehicle Quattro?
    Either way check all your driveline bushings. Snub mount, engine mounts, tranny mounts, rear diff mounts and the front bushing.

    Does the popping sound like metal on metal, or more of a thud(low tone) than a high tone?

    quattro....metal on metal.....sounds like its near the cats area
