The S5 competes with the 335i, and the direct competitor to the M3 is the upcoming RS5. Now THAT will be a challenge for the M3. I have a sneaking suspicion the RS5 will blow its doors off.

That's correct and i've been saying it for awhile. I have now run 2 different RS4's and it's been neck and neck each time. I actually won a run or two, but overall I lose by about a quarter car length....

just another reason to get the S5!! I was talking with an owner of a black on black 08 M3 with the optional sunroof (free) who payed full MSRP 64,000$ and after looking at his car I think the S5 has honestly better looks. Plus he got the wrong color, black which he chose b/c the sales guy said they are always in-demand. For only $6,000 more though I think it's a toss up of power, or looks....me I take looks.

i am a bmw owner and i dont think the s5 was meant to compete with the m3... it should be able to blow a stock 335 away though.

the M3 is a beast...no comparison what's so ever...anyways, yes the S5 is actually light weight(compared to other Audi models) i think it's around 3600 lbs, and when compared to the RS4, it's a hair slower. So, Rs4= ~+70hp, but about 400lbs more :(

It doesnt blow away a stock 335 though. Fifth gear did a track test on the S5 vs. 335. (I'm also a 335 owner, but I fully intend to pick up an RS5 when they hit the market in a couple years. )

A modded 335 w/ an LSD > M3 though. Honestly, had BMW given the 335 an LSD, I think they would have totally shot themselves in the foot. A lot of M3 orders are being dropped and the car isnt selling well from what I've heard.

I do prefer the looks of the S5 over pretty much any car though. Cant wait for the RS5.

if for no other reason, (and there are many, many other reasons), i would choose the m3 over the s5 because of this: rwd vs quattro.. I would choose rwd any day.. and i was reminded of this when i drove my friends bmw 328i the other day.. sliding/drifting is just more fun than understeer..

Audi's are good cars, but when it comes to speed/weight they suck. and RS4 cab weighs 4.2k..E90 M3 coupe weighs 3.6 I think. And I garuntee your 2.0t is not even close to tracking capability/handling/acceleration/top speed of an E46 M3.

Audi needs to beef up there competition if a beefed out 2.0t A4 is as much as a 335i.

BMW has always had a leg up on Audi. Audi, just recently started building competitive cars. But, what I like about my Audi, is that it looks great and performs good enough. Ill take that compromise any day.

Uhhh...what!? Apparently someone needs to bone up on their knowledge of Audi's domination in motorsport. See which company took home more checkered flags in 2007. Audi is bringing them home in DTM, American Le Mans, 24 Hours of Le Mans. Why BMW won't compete with Audi in any of these elite competitions...is anybody's guess....

ok i agree with what you are saying, but you fail on the beefed out 2.0t vs. 335i as those cars arent even competing against each other.....so yeah you need 2.0t with some work in it to compete.... so what, thats comparing apples and oranges. might as well do a comparison of a 330i to an s4 or s5 since that wouldnt make sense either.

audi is definately starting to step up its game though. i think they are staying conservative on some of their vehicles when it comes to power....but they are making some amazing machines.

So yes they are competing price wise,speed wise, you gotta spend 65-70k to get kinda the same performance that 43k gets you. price wise BMW dominates in performance against merc and audi. I know that if a 335i should be compared against an S4/RS4 then whats that left the E92 M3 to do?..

All of the road racing series race in the rain. Dragstrip? No. I need to drive my car in the snow because it occassionally snows here, I go skiing, I go hiking in the summer so I drive on unpaved forest service roads. It probably doesn't snow a whole lot in Scottsdale.

This is a comparison of rwd vs. awd so it's apples to oranges to begin with. A better comparison would be the 335xi coupe to the S5. It isn't fair to compare the weight of a RS4 cab to a M3 coupe either. RS4 sedan weighs 3957 lbs, M3 sedan weighs 3726 for a difference of 231lbs, not 600. Audis are heavy relative to the competition.

Did I say it was? Of course not.

I'm sure the e92 M3 is an awesome car, so is the e46 M3.

If I didn't require awd I would probably buy the Merc C63 over the M3. Since I do require awd I'll likely go with the S5 because it can be a daily driver, snow car, and occasional road course track day car.

Price wise, it's better to compare the 328i rwd sedan at $43,600 to the a4 2.0t fwd at $36,450.

A low $40k 335i doesn't even come close to the "luxury" options in A4.

A well optioned 335i is in the mid 40's. $44,425
A well optioned A4 2.0T quattro is in the mid 30's. $37,825 with $1000 audio upgrade ($36,825 without).
Quit a good deal of difference in price.

kinda just started then didnt stop, but you honestly had a hard time driving your M3 in the snow? I drove min through NV when it was snowing and I just had to kinda go slow. were you using snow tires?

someone in the GCC is talking about their optioned out A4 and he said it was 44k i think.
I just saw a 335i for about 45k on the showroom floor with options.
and yeah I should have been comparing it to an S4, sorry about that.
