I was 9/10ths of the way through a deal to buy one. I'd been researching and anxiously waiting for it for months.
I loved the idea of having an awd car that handles like a rwd..
I'd come from a fully modified WRX w a built sti motor in it.
But other than the even cheaper build quality of the EVO, I was really looking forward to owning one of these. So when I could throw down a deposit, I did. Only to find out that I could only get the 5spd in base GSR trim. No sight, sound, spoiler package for Canada. So I opted for the MR to get the high wing and better rims, and suspension. But then when I heard about all the delays due to a technical issue w the SST trans, I changed to the base GSR.
Well, the car finally showed up and I went to get it but the stealership tried to slide a 10.25% interest rate past me without saying anything! That, on top of $42k cdn for a base model w no options!! This would have worked out to $64k over five years for a $42k car that starts at $33k in the U.S....
Given that a loaded 08 sti was only $45k cdn and 5.9% at the time (0.9% now!), I pulled my deposit straight away. But despite my love for subies and my deep entrenchment in that community (I Moderate on a local forum and attend all the meets etc.), I couldn't get past the looks of the new sti.
So I pissed off to Audi and got an A3 s-Line w all the trimmings for less than the EVO. Ok, I lose the awd and the high performance for now, but next time, I'll go balls out on an S4 or RS4 and be done.
