Driving w/ new injectors before ECU Flash?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I wanto upgrade from stock injectors but I don't want to pay to have them installed and the have the ECU flashed. Can I drive with the new injectors to the shop which would be about 20 miles away? I'm looking to bump up to the tt225 injectors.

Re: Driving w/ new injectors before ECU Flash?

you had to ask them for what? to sit in their parking lot for 15 minutes? my shop wanted $100 to install them, what a joke, i went to www.goapr.com, printed off the injector install DIY guide, drove to the tuner. popped the hood, walked and got some lunch came back when it was a tad bit cooler, swapped injectors in less than 20 min and started the car and pulled it around the back....

your car should start just fine, it may stutter at first because the injectors have to be bled but it should still start and run... to the OP, driving 20 miles should be fine as long as you stay out of boost

You can always pull the ECU and drive another car down and have it flashed.

Thanks for all the replies. Think i'll swap them out at home and just take it easy going to the shop.

i asked them if i could drive it there with the injectors in, and they didnt recommend it. when i tryed to start the car unflashed it cranked and cranked then would start and stall out within 30 seconds. i just drove there and they let me install them in the parking lot then they came outside and flashed it.

Re: Driving w/ new injectors before ECU Flash?

the issue is not necesarilly the injectors and flash...moreso that the car needs time to adapt to new injectors. When the flash is done, any residual memory of fuel trim settings are lost (the same can be accomplished by clearing codes in VAG-COM). The car wont start because it has to learn again....if the injectors are swapped and the faults cleared your trims will reset to 0 and the car can learn from scratch. You CAN get to the shop on the new injectors using the above notes...HOWEVER...there is a chance the ECU will trim fueling to the point that its off by more than an average of 18% fuel (in this case it will be cutting fuel based on o2 sensor readings) which means it will be spiking 25% (esp in boost) and will hit soft-limp mode and trim out your boost as a safety measure...your car will be fine even in this mode for the drive...you just wont go higher than a few pounds of boost until the trim resets. you can use lemmiwinks to recenter the fuel trim for proper operation even without programming...you just wont get the added fueling the programming asks for to make more power....

you WILL NOT cause harm to the car...the ECU is far smarter than tuners indicate...they say this because if you do it and soft limp hits, you will freak out and think you are tanking the motor...which is not the case...its just not sure exactly whats going on and protecting itself.

in short....change injectors, clear codes (or hit the button in VAG...either way the trims will clear)..drive OUT OF BOOST to the shop, get flashed, go home, have fun.

you can trim the part throttle fueling even faster once the ijectors are in using basic settings block 032 (will only trim when cruising at part-throttle) to get the ECU adjusted faster for a smoother drive....but the car will be fine regardless. when flashed, the trims will reset either way.

Re: Driving w/ new injectors before ECU Flash?

Thanks again everyone. I dont have vag-com yet so I wontbe able to clear codes. I think I can control myself and like grandma to the shop. Can someone explain "driving out of boost." Still learning about all this turbo stuff. My impression is that I dont go past 0 mm/hg correct?

Re: Driving w/ new injectors before ECU Flash?

run funny yes but the injectors are how much larger than stock? assuming you have a negative correction factor to zero; you can go up to 25%

so say you had 300cc injectors, 25% more would be 375cc?

hmm TT225's are 386cc and stockers are how much?

car won't run with tt225 injectors and oem injector software. I tried it for a few minutes for fun when I was installing my K04 and it died within seconds.

don't let them put the injectors in for that much money, easy to do yourself.

I'm running GIAC Big Injector w/380cc Genesis injectors. I have the hand-held flash changer with "stock" and "pump (93 octane)" choices. When I take it for emissions or dealership visits, I change it back to "stock" before I take it in... I've driven it like this with no driveability problems, other than the performance reminds why I got "chipped".

Yes, give the ECU some credit!
