    Key fob ?

When we bought the A4 it only had one key-the previous owner lost one. I though I had read some time ago that you could get a new one and program it yourself(read, not go to the deal) because the nearest dealer to me is 2 hrs. away. So we got a new fob only to find out it needs to be dealer programmed .

    A couple of questions:
1-Does it have to be dealer programmed, or can it be vaged?

2-Could I swap out the immobilized chip from the old fob to the new and just use the old one as a spare to unlock the car as we can do now with the new fob?

Just saw the diy for the b7 swap too, may have to consider this as well

    Re: Key fob ?

I had to take it to the dealer, and pay around $100 to have them do it. They said it takes an hour, but I can't imagine it being anything more than sticking the key into a machine, typing the VIN, and letting it download. I could see my car from the waiting area, and it didn't even move for about 30 mins.

Make sure you check the lock/unlock buttons too because they had to go back inside to fix those after telling me everything was working.

As much as I hated to do it, I felt it was good insurance if I ever lost my only key.

If you do take it to the dealer make sure you take ALL the keys you want programmed.
