B7 Key Fob for B6 DIY

Few questions:

1) What the hell is the immo chip, lol? Is it that capsule looking thing next to the blade?

2) Also, Are we switching the green electrical boards from the B6 to the B7?

3) For some reason, ever since I bought a new laptop (went from XP to Vista) my VagCom no longer works. Does it only work for XP?

4) How come initially you said you cut you existing B6 shank....but then said that you took it to a locksmith for it to be cut?

4) You can modify the B6 blade yourself (with patience), but he said that that if you have an uncut B7 key, it might be difficult finding a locksmith/keycutter that can cut side-winder keys like ours.

Bump for not hijacking the thread. Vista troubleshooting will take a while. Start new one and indicate what kind of interface are you using.

I will try to go the dealer and see if he can make me another key or "fix" the one I broke. In worst case I will mess around with valet key by cutting plastic till I get to the immo chip.

just got my new key in and it so damn lame that they require a T6 torx to remove the back....where can i buy one? Is there anything I could substitute for it?

^^^Wiha Tools, Sears, Ace Hardware. You might try a 00 Philips, but you'll prolly bugger up the screw head.

Alright, well one of my friend has a T6....so said 'fug it' and attempted to modify the shank of the kwy for it to fit the new remote. I actually got it fit perfectly except it wiggles just a little bit more than I would like....still closes and opens fine though.

Can I buy a new uncut shank anywhere? On ebay they have the longer shanks but not the newwer/shorter shanks

I did purchase two B7 keys with supposedly virgin immo chips and uncut key blades. I swapped the immo chip from my old B6 fob into the B7 fob. Didn't want to go to the dealer to have the virgin chip programmed and deal with their BS about how you can't do this. I then had the key blade cut at a locksmith. You still need to vag-com the fob.

Why would they say you cant do it can it really be done?

Quick Tip for those who have there little glass "transponder chip" glued in:

Instead of trying to dremel/file around it, which is not a smart idea, lol...hit it with the heat gun for about 30 seconds on both sides of the remote. Mine was glued in place, I heated it up and turned it upside down and it just fell right out

You're right, it's a T5! I just noticed that I had it wrong!

So I'm just getting into the world of modding and this is definatly one that I want to try. I am also just getting into Vag Com and want to try a few things out. So now for the stupid question: I know that you can link into the cars "brain" via the connector port and control different settings, but how can you reprogam a key Fob with it being a completely seperate unit with no way of direct PC interface? Does the Fob chip communicate with the sensor in the ignition and allow you to program it from there?

so I did the modification and the key works in the ignition no problem. So I took the new key to Rennart in Chicago to have it vag-com'd and they werent able to program it. They said (and showed me) how the key wasnt being recognized when you pressed the lock/trunk/unlock buttons on the B7 key (the red light on the fob lights up, though). Anyone have any idea why the fob isnt being recognized? I purchased the key from ebay.

You will have to obtain a B7 Key Fob. If you can get one with an uncut blade, you're way ahead of the game. A good source for key fobs is eBay. Do a search for “Audi Key Fobs”. You can find them for as little as $25. The more expensive ones advertise uncut blades and virgin immobilizers. You can always buy one at the dealer, but their pricing is around $300.

The main statement above is that it needs to be a virgin because then the dealer won't program or cut a key then, correct?

your dealer should be able to cut the key but it will be up to the parts guy. All B6 keys are cut in house but the B7 keys are only ordered by vin for security purposes... something new. But if you tell 'em to cut it to match your B6 key they are capable. FYI check your new b7 keys for compatibility and for gold battery contacts, the first production runs had a few issues.

FYI people, this mod does NOT work with an 02 a4 or models with the control module 8E0959433T you can only do this mod with an 03+ or need a module that is 8E0959433BB in order for your new B7 key to be recognized. the module is interchangeable but for 415$ part (module) alone. Unfortunately i found out the hard way and had to purchase a new key. but meh, not that bad i guess, i did need a spare key. just wish my spare didn't consist of two keys lol (B6 key as remote and B7 key as key)

Cool enough when your old one looks like a worn out POS. The B7 keys seem to be a little more durable in terms of materials used. Should stay looking nicer longer.

Plus, common wisdom was you couldn't do this, just like a lot of other things we do with our cars. Like the man once said when asked why he climbed the mountain, "Because it was there!"

I am STILL waiting in a T-5 torx bit. I have already retrofitted the shank of my B6 key to fit the B7 remote....ANYWAYS, When I turn the car on, it immediately turns off, which is obvious why...but once, just once, I turned the car on with the remote and it ran perfectly fine.

As soon as i can get the transponder in the B7 remote, i will hook my VAG up to it, and I will let you all know!

Ok so im Fu**ed, my b6 transponder was glued in, and after spending 30min trying to get it outta there I broke it.. I bought one of those "new Uncut" keys off ebay (see link below) and they said the transponder in it has never been programmed.. Could I program the "virgin immobilizer chip" in the b7 key they sent me to work with my b6 a4? Also the dealer parts guy quoted me $140 for programming and $20 to cut it.. Im ok with paying $20 for a cut key, but is there another way I can program the key and save myself the $140?

I have a brand new key from my '07 Avant that was just totaled. It was the spare key. Perfect condition. AS-NEW condition. Never used in car. Fresh
battery. You'll need to swap out the blade, and have the key recoded to your car. This can be done with a VAG.

Ya I know I totally would have BUT thats what you get if your an over excited guy that all he has been thinking about is getting the B7 key working ASAP, and not taking neccesary precautions! AHH! WTF do I do? I have like 3 (no joke, 3 b7 keys, one is missing the torx screws, one is just sitting there needing a new blade and immo chip, and the third is the one I plan to use for this with a blank shank and a "never programmed" virgin immo..) AHH this DIY is killing me (money-wise and nerve-wise)! What can I do!

My plan is as follows:
- Pay Audi $20 to cut my b7 key to match my b6 key's shank
-- The problem is though what do I do about getting the LOCK/UNLOCK/TRUNK/PANIC/ buttons to work AND HOW DO I PROGRAM THE IMMOBILIZER CHIP IN IT! (preferably with VAG-COM!.. Whats the process to vag it!)
