Popped my drag strip cherry today...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Got there a little late so I only ended up getting 2 runs. First one pretty much sucked, but I didn't break anything so I was happy. Second one I felt much more comfortable and had a good improvement and still didn't break anything.

My concern is that my times seem pretty high for my mods. I'm making full boost, but I haven't tested for leaks.

    First run:
    .838 - R/T
    2.039 - 60'
    5.827 - 330'
    8.968 - 1/8
    79.54 - 1/8 mph
    11.593 - 1000'
    13.832 - 1/4
    100.48 mph

    Second run:
    .642 - R/T
    1.895 - 60'
    5.556 - 330'
    8.574 - 1/8
    82.74 - 1/8 mph
    11.123 - 1000'
    13.314 - 1/4
    102.11 mph

Mods are in my sig, but I'm wonding if the stock IC's played a part or if I just need to learn how to drive?? Track conditions were pretty mild. 76 degrees, sea level, overcast.

All in all, I'm happy nothing broke, but I was expecting 12's

Re: Popped my drag strip cherry today...

Only code I've got is for an AC pressure switch. Temps were mild, probably 75-80 degrees. I didn't check, but weather.com said a high of 76 today. I'm thinking I might have a small boost leak, but I am spiking at around 21psi. Yes, I'm sure I have K04's...

This was down at Bradenton Motorsport. I was launching around 2500-3000rpm's, but honestly, I didn't look. Being a noob at the track I was just focused on the tree and NOT hitting the wall.

You could break the 12's by lowering your 60' but that is still way off in both trap speed and ET for a stage 3.

60 foot wasn't bad for a 1st trip to the track. As Alex noted, dropping the 60ft (ie - better launch) still wouldn't be enough to make sense.

Out of the box AWE stage 3 pump gas. The only thing I don't have from that kit is the Intercoolers and headers. Those are both stock.

EDIT - Oh yea, I did have 3/4 of a tank at the time with full interior, etc.

I ran a few mid to high 12's a while back at stage 2+ on stock intercoolers no MBC you should easily see low low 12's or even 11's on that setup.

Get some ics and turn the boost up, not to start anything but the cars not making anywhere near 420hp thats the problem. Revhard went 13.1 at 104mph stage 1 full weight on 19ss with a slipping clutch on garbage tires in his old car and his car was making less then 325hp.. He had a chip and catback thats it

His rims weigh 15lbs, I think. He noted he was spiking to 21psi.

Re: Popped my drag strip cherry today...

The ambient temps are certainly playing a part in your high times, espeically as you get further down the track, pushing the car harder. Although you are still on stock IC's, you should be trapping much higher on the 1/8 and 1/4 mi. Your second run was obviously better and with a 1.895, it wasn't a terrible launch.

What were your shift points? Thats the only other thing I could think of that could be causing a slower trap, besides the ones discussed..

Re: Popped my drag strip cherry today...

I don't think the temperature has much to do with it...

Here is a run with my Stage 2 on 93 octane, stock downpipes, all cats and stock IC's... Run was in 75 degree weather after hotlapping.

    1.753 - 60'
    5.357 - 330'
    8.312 - 1/8
    84.14 - 1/8 mph
    10.849 - 1000'
    12.974 - 1/4
    106.34 mph

vs. his stage 3 in the same temp...

    1.895 - 60'
    5.556 - 330'
    8.574 - 1/8
    82.74 - 1/8 mph
    11.123 - 1000'
    13.314 - 1/4

Your car does NOT have 420hp......not anywhere close, id give you 300hp, tops. You're running what a STOCK B5 S4 runs, basically.....You need to check a LOT of things, I have an awe stage 3 car on pump too, and it's deff. a low 12 sec car. What rpm are you shifting at in each gear?

Id say the first thing to check is for boost leaks.

Did you happen to look at his second? On his first run he had a 2.0 60ft, what do you expect? You can throw out that first run as far as im concerned. Also, if he is making the boost he says he is, he doesn't have a "huge" boost leak.

You have to take in MANY, MANY different factors....elevation, temp, humidity, condition of stock car....you can't make a blatant assumption that a stock S4 is slower/faster than your car, that it's the standard. I hate to "bench race" but car and driver trapped 100mph and ran a 14.1 like 6 years back.

At the end of the day the OPS ride is clearly not performing up to par. So lets help this guy out.

I think some logs would help.

I agree, if the op could post up some 3rd gear pulls it would help alot.

Re: Popped my drag strip cherry today...

Ya know, I expected some flaming and that really doesn't bother me since this was MY FIRST TIME AT THE TRACK, but it's painfully obvious there's something wrong. Thank you to those that are trying to help me track down the issue. I'll try to do some third gear logs, but what do you guys recommend I log? Just boost?

Also, I usually hold at around 17-18psi boost according to my AWE gauge, but I'm pretty sure that thing is about a tick or so low like a lot of the others. I'm going to try getting some new DV's this week. I've had them for almost 50k miles and it's cheap enough to just replace them.

I'm shifting at around 6500-6800rpm's. I've found from my street experiences that shifting any higher just kills my power since I am running stock IC's. I know I'm no pro driver, but I'm shifting pretty quickly. It's not like I'm driving Miss Daisy
