a Bit longer than 5 minute Fogs w JUST Parking/City Lights

Originally I was going to do what Eddie Man and FatAuto did DIY Link, Eddie Man's original thread and FatAuto's AW link
Props to FatAuto and Eddie Man!!!

OK, now with pictures...

1) with the switch on "Auto" push in with a bit of force and begin turning the knob COUNTER CLOCKWISE, once the switch is in between the "O" and "Auto" position, you will hear/feel a slight click and the knob will go in slightly

2) while still turning COUNTER CLOCKWISE and pushing in slightly, move the knob all the way to the "O" position and push a bit harder, the knob will then push in a bit more

3) while still pushing in on the knob (at its second "pushed in" position) begin moving the knob back towards the "Auto" position or CLOCKWISE, the knob should stop in between the "O" and "Auto" positions, then just pull out, the whole assembly should come out...

4) next, you will wrap the three strands of copper from a Radio Shack wire around pins 1 & 2 on the connector and place a piece of electrical tape over pin 2. (images below for reference).




5) put the connector back into the switch, it will take a bit more force because of the electrical tape over the pin but, it will go in

6) Use VAG-COM to Code the car to RTW (Rest of The World). Now enjoy!

Ghetto? Not really, just bored at home after installing my ecodes and decided to see if there was a less permanent way of getting the fogs on w/o the headlights...

If you think its Ghetto, don't do it to your car... I personally like the look and the option of having them on without the headlights (like many other vehicles) and when I'm driving through the sentry gate to go to work (in the Marine Corps) we are required to turn off our headlights but, the road leading to the gate is riddled with pot holes, now I can see them and not blind the sentries...

Not so far, and the guy I bought them from said he hadn't had any problems with them either...

I did hear that other people had issues though... So far I've been fine...

Oh, my fault then, I misunderstood...

Well, I had just installed the ecodes so, yes, I do have the city lights already...

If you do not have city lights, the only thing this mod will allow you to do is run your fog lights without having your headlights on... In your case, that just means you'll have your parking lights on and fogs...

Nah, I don't mind... I know earlier I said I would do it today but, I got held up in Annapolis and once again, didn't get home until it was dark... I'm hoping that if I pull off the connector, the electrical tape doesn't come with it but, again, nothing that a set of tweezers couldn't fix...

I'll try and get some tomorrow for you guys! I'll just edit the original post and bump the thread...

i dont get it. I tried this literally 5 times today after work. I even threw a bit of solder on the fig8 wires cause they didnt fit 100% tight. wrapped pin #2 just like the pic with 2 strips of tape and tried and tried and tried......nothing. Exactly the same as it is now. :(

no...it wasnt mentioned. i read eddie mans tutorial many months ago and remember the vag portion and the wire cutting, then when I saw your post I figured...hey easy way on B6s. (eddies was based on B7s and many were asking if it would work on B6s) and never thought of it. ohh well....now I gotta get a vag cable :(

actually I did this mod a few days ago. But guess what? ALL VAG. No hardwiring or taking anything apart. You just change some codes from the American package to the Canadian package (which when you do you'll also get the one-touch-unlock-all-doors mod). When my switch is in the off position my fogs are on, with no headlights. When my switch is on Auto, the fogs will be on without the headlights, and come night time (or a tunnel or parking garage etc) the fogs switch off and the headlights switch on. Fogs can be on with the headlights on by using the regular method of putting the switch at the "headlights on" position and pulling out, like normal.

Any issue with the tape getting ripped or slidding of because of heat? I know electrical tape is great but sometimes it is not so great.

What would happen if the tape rips or moves and then the metal comes in contact with the switch?

Also, what if you go to remove and the tape get stuck in the harness? This may never ever be a problem since once it is done it is done.

Sorry for all the questions, this is an awesome way to not have to cut the wires, which is what held me back from doing this in the first place. Defiinately want to do this just a little nervous about the electrical tape lasting.

as far as the tape moving around from heat... I live in Hawaii, no issues so far... once you do this you shouldn't have to remove your switch anymore, and if you do it just takes another 10 minutes to correct the problem...

when i did pull off the switch, the tape did get stuck in the harness but, i just pulled it right out since the adhesive is not on the side that touches the harness...

also, if you look at the harness, there is really no place for the tape to slide to...

anyway, 6 months with this and my fogs still come on with only city lights, and i have no DIS...

Yeah, I am def going to do this. I love the idea of not having to cut/splice anything. Hopefully I can do this and the OEM mute switch mod for my V1. I already ran the phone cord to the back of the radio, just need to install switch and connect harness.

I am going to be in Maui the first two weeks of Setp., I assume you are on Oahu?
