so i have a 98.5 1.8t and i just installed my boost guage today and i have no boost and when i idle i have 20 vac. my car is GIAC chipped and i have a 710n DV. i knew from the start my car felt slower and now i finally know that there is no boost going through. and at WOT at most its 1-2 psi. So what should i do? i have my stock ecu sitting in my room i bought the giac and ecu togther.
EDIT: oh i noticed that my fuel gauge needle moves only when idle it sort of moves up and down, really strange.
    Thanks in advance.

    Could be a few problems

    1) bad chip - put in your old ECU and see where you are boosting. YOu shoudl be at 6-7 stock at WOT.

    2) limp mode - someone more knowlegable needs to chime in on this. I'd do a TBA first thing.

    3) Bad BPV. Torn BPV diaphram. Check your 710n. Switch out to your old BPV to troubleshoot. DO this with the CHIP IN. YOu should be boosting over 14 psi.

    4) boost leak - check all your hoses for tears. Check your connections.

    5) bad gauge. Are your connections good? Check the connection to the back of the gauge itself. It should be crimped correctly. Also check the connection to your vac line.

bad chip... lets eliminate that one... cause if it was a bad chip he would not be able to start the car.

Limp mode could be caused by numerous things... but limp wouldnt go down to 1-2 psi.

Boost leak is the most likely one...

check all of your hoses... going from the BPV to the intake manifold... all hoses coming off the turbo... even the hose from the intake to the FPR

Limp mode is more around 5 LBS with a chipped ECU and around 3-4 with a stock one.

I wouldn't suspect a crimped hose if he has vacuum readings, but definitely check that since the supplied hose can pinch very easily.

I would suspect you have a boost leak, some hole or tear in one of the hoses.

I hate to mention this but quite a few 97-98 1.8T cars had faulty wategates and this was one of the symptoms.....

Those turbos were recalled a long time ago. At least the one in my car was.

But it does sound like his wastegate could be stuck open. Also, it could be the N75 valve.

I am 100% sure it is a blown turbo. I had 20hg and 2psi spikes when mine went, firend of mine has same things. Take a long screwdriver. Place it against the wategate actuator rod and see if it wiggles loose. Should be very tight, if blown it will just flop everywhere...

Were the turbo's really bad or were the wastegates just bad?

If it was just the wastegate, why not replace the wastegate actuator? It's just a vacuum diaphram with an arm attached to it.

Most the time when the actuator goes the wastegate plate goes with it, it chips itself away and is burned.... I can post pictures of mine if anyone wants to see... in that case, you replacing the actuator wouldnt do anything...

so most of you think replacing and checking the hoses will make my car come back alive. I will manually check if i dont seem any tears im going to take it to audi and let them change out all hoses.

98a4- how are you so sure its a blown turbo, can you please explain to me.
    thanks guys.

Yeah i'm wondering why my boost is so low too. I have a GIAC chip, TS Bypass, and Cold air intake.

What should be the normal level of PSI for that?

    Thanks

Spike 1.3-1.4 and hold 1.1 with GIAC, not X chip
