My gf is going to get me a new HU for my bday. I'm thinking Clarion. I'm not looking to have a massive system in my car...all I want is a cleaner crisper sound than the shit concert system I have now. I will mostly likely be upgrading my rear deck speakers at the same time. Most likely Infinty.

So the HU that I'm looking at has 1.8v preamp voltage. I'm not exactly sure what that means. Does it mean that the HU won't have enough power for the aftermarket speakers to operate correctly?

no just means its not as high as a 4v preamp output. the higher the voltage the "cleaner" the signal is supposed to be.

So I would get more background noise/hiss from a lower voltage?

not necessarily.. background noise or a hiss can be due to EMI or poor audio recordings.

I've got a panasonic ghost face i got from crutchfield for $225, with everything you needed to install it.

CQ-HR1003U is the part number, it has a 50x4, 5 volt pre amp out puts. Matches with the factory lighting, 100%. Has many more colors then I have pictured... but you get the idea: here are the pics.

But if you get the dash kit and the wiring harness i'd suggest getting it off of crutchfield they have the best fitting dash kit i've seen yet.

jesse, I was actually looking at some of your old post and noticed that one. I was seriously thinking about that one until I realized how difficult it would be to have touchscreen radio in the car. I don't know about you but when I listen to the radio and I'm driving, if I need to change the station or something like that I just feel around for the button I need without taking my eyes off the road. A touchscreen radio would make that difficult.

But that is a pretty sweet HU. I really like that one.

The higher voltage applies to the pre-outs. It decreases the possibility of noise being injected into the signal. If you don't plan on running amps it doesn't matter. The Eclipses are always a good choice for decks.

I'm on the Crutchfield website and it adds this things to my order...do I need it? Volkswagen Antenna Adapter 1995-up, Motorola male to OEM antenna female. It also says I might want to consider a PAC OEM-2 universal interface.

I have no F-ing clue what all this shit is or if I need it. Please help!

Nakamichi CD-400. I realize the dash lighting doesnt match, but it's the only head unit I'd own apart from this:

shit i used to have that unit in my s13, at that time it was the best 800 bucks i spent. got to love the in dash 6 disc cd changers. i wish i pulled it out of the car before i sold it. IM making a sad puppy dog face right now.

You will need an antenna adaptor. Not sure why they'd recommend an interface. Are you replacing a bose system?

The flash screwed it all up...You need to see it in person to appreciate it.

Another thing...Get a Head Unit that MATCHES....Form over function in this case...You listen to your radio what...50% of the time...Max...

But you have to look at the damn thing ALL the time.

The Sony matches really well, and sounds really good. It also is really easy to use, as far as having an actual knob, and has good features...Like sub control, a bunch of EQs and a neat feature, that can virtually raise the sound level. Know how the speakers are at about shin level? Press the button and it raises the sound to roughly head level. It sure seems to work...

It also has a bunch of other colors if that doesn't suit your fancy...Purple, green, pink...All that...Plus MP3...And it's only about $200.

Hence why I choose the Nakamichi.
