    Cool Larger oil filter

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I don't know if any of you had heard about the larger oil filter that Audi is recommending for the 2004.5 A4 http://forums.audiworld.com/a4gen2/msgs/622904.phtml

Anyways I did a little research today tried to find the Amsoil equal to Audi filter all I could find was a Hastings (who actually makes Amsoils filter for them) there is no Amsoil application in that size though so I picked up the hastings and I also dropped by the dealer turns out the Audi filter was another half a inch longer than the Hastings so I picked that up instead.

I also spoke with the parts guy. He said that they had gotten a service bulletin that Audi is recommending the new larger filter and synthetic oil for all 97+ 1.8T's

The part# is (068 115 561 B) I threw it on when I got home tonight. It went right on with no trouble. Just make sure that theres nothing in the way when putting this on there's a couple wires real close to the filter mount.

All I can say is this is worth while doing I gained a at least a half a quart of oil capacity and Im' hopeing that my oil temps will drop a few degrees.

Good to know there are no issues with this, I plan on moving this direction on my next oil change.

Here's another one fellas. It compares it to the M1 equivelant of the old filter. I called Champion (the manufacturerers of the M1 filters and they said they do not have a new equivelant yet). Oh and as an update to the thread that I posted on AW, many dealers are now admitting that the filter is reverse compatible and are offering it to pre 04.5 vehicles while being serviced. cheers! Mike

If you are going to use the larger filter for routine oil changes 3-5K you should be okay. Longer drain intervals I'd recommend the Amsoil SDF Oil Filter. It's not the size off the filter the really matters, it's what's inside and how it was constructed. The bigger filter will help in reduction of oil temp and capacity, but only slighty. If you race or live in extreme HOT Temp zone I'd go oil cooler and with our cars you don't require a huge one.
BTW, "MANN" makes a oil filter that is Larger too and was used on a lot of VW diesel applications. I used to run them on my VW Rabbits. Don't have the part number handy.

Already have one sitting on the shelf, awaiting my next change.

That, combined with my S4 oil/water heat exchanger, should keep things nice and cool.

Well I'm hopping that Amsoil will step up to the plate and come out with a SDF in the larger size...I did find a hastings in the same large filter but I'm guessing that's not as good as the Amsoil SDF. So I opted for the Audi filter since it was bigger.

Also I was told that the larger filter that Audi is selling for the 1.8T now is same part# as what they sell for the 77-84 Diesel Rabbit.

Sounds like the same as the MANN filter I had mentioned.

The S4 unit is a direct bolt-on; it uses the stock A4 coolant hoses.

It was installed because the oil/water heat exchangers have a bad habit of failing internally...had 2 of them go on my Jetta before I went with an external Mocal. Similar unit failed on my 944S as well, resulting in the rod bearings being replaced.

So does the oil run cooler with the S4 unit or is it just more reliable than the A4 unit?

By the way everyone got a chance to drive a little today and my oil temps are noticably cooler.

Can't hurt to do it more often, but some see it as a waste of money depending on the oil your using.

Just more capacity = better cooling.

I've yet to see my car run above 200-205 with the S4 unit, even when being driven aggressively. I think that's pretty decent for a Stg3 car. The 205 deg reading was crawling along in 1st gear 5pm stop and go traffic on a 90 degree day with the A/C on.

By the way everyone got a chance to drive a little today and my oil temps are noticably cooler.
More oil capacity will do that for you .

My 944S's 2.5L DOHC 4 took 6.5 qts of oil. I used to have to argue with the parts monkeys at the local auto parts place about the fact that, no joke, it takes 7 quarts to do an oil change.

Don't know about Valvoline...but it's my opinion that Amsoil is far superior product compared to Mobil 1 or Valvoline.

You should check them out www.amsoil.com lots of good reading
