How did all 3 HDs go bad at once? Couldnt you reinstall on a spare HD and pull data from the HDs? Most of the time esp during summer HDs go back casue of heat. Unless you are running Raid 0 then you are screwed.

i probably had like 20,000 songs.
cuz it was full on both 40GB that's give or take 80GB. 5mb / song.
on 80,000 MBs. that makes well over 10,000 songs.
then i had about half way 80gb filled up...

wait can you explain what happened? Did you do anythin dramatic to your OS recently, like do a rollback, restore, OS repair, or reinstall? I had the same thing happen to me and my 160gb HD. I ahd a corruption in my OS and had to repair it. Well, when you repair it you are basically going back to the version you installed from the disk. This means that if you intalled Service Pack 1 it is now GONE. You have to do a windows update.

My HD came back online afer i did that. It's a good thing I didn't overreact by reformatting or anything.

    this is exactly what happend.

all of sudden my windows will never boot. however the DOS screen did. Windows XP loading screen was basically blank.

    Safe mode didn't work,
    Previous good setting never worked.

so i lurk around the web to see if i can get some help.
some guy told me that on windows Repair mode, i can FIXBOOT and FIXMBR. so i did.
those 2 things turned my FAT32 RAID HDD's into MBR and it was partitioned somehow. so i couldn't access both of my RAID HDD's since then. the only option for me to access these 2 HDD's were to format and reisntall windows XP

and my 80GB was ****ed up in the middle of doing something by my mistake.

FIXBOOT creates a new partition in your main system partition to boot from. FIXMBR stands for fix master boot record... so you can boot up again. Problem is seeing the old partition. Thats where it effed everything up. I haven't tried these commands to fix anything so I don't know what the next step would have been to recover your data.

If you reformatted then there is not much you can do except take it to a data recovery specialist who can try to recover what wasn't overwritten by the new install of XP.

Next time do a simple "repair your installation of windows XP" or something, I forgot the exact wording. This option appears if you boot up with your win XP CD. Then go online asap and install SP1. Sorry you lost your music bro.. I was pissed when I thought I lost mine.

Most mobos only come with 2 ides. IDE-0, and IDE-1. That means you can have a primary and secondary master, and a primary and secondary slave (4 storage decives). SCSI and RAID is a hardware based means of having more than 4 devices. Back when I had SCSI I think I was capable of 8 devices. I never used them though... Broken, if you are only using 2 HDDs then you shouldn't even bother with RAID imo. Stick to IDEs.

I'd also recommend to everyone that they not use the HDD in which your OS is installed to store any of your files. I would even move the "My Documents" folder to a secondary drive. That way if something goes wrong with the OS and you don't know what to do but reinstall, you can easily do so without worrying about your data. The only thing that is lost is maybe your address book, email, or favorites if you don't back them up or use eudora to store it all on another drive.

never save?! I didn't mean that. I mean save to another hdd. I think you know what I mean, but I want to make sure.

Yeah I forgot to meantion that. SCSI is also faster than IDE. RAID also alows you to use multiple drives as one and is less prone to errors. Unless you are using them in a server or as rendering drives, most home computers won't see the advantages.

I would get another 40GB (or whatever you have in your RAID array) and set it as RAID-5; it'll be a tad slower, but this won't happen again...

Are you running RAID-0? or RAID 0+1? I would almost ALWAYS to run a mirror setup, in case shit like this happens. This is another reason I tell my clients to stay away from the RAID-0 setup alone.

Depending on how much your files mean to you, you can send your HDD(s) to data recovery, which costs a pretty penny, but they will recover most of your data. There is also software you can use to attempt to recover the RAID partitions.

Are you running a Intel or Promise RAID controller?

Only RAID I recommend is RAID-5... The safest way is to Mirror, and create multiple partitions on the HDD's and use one spare partition and mount it as a seperate logical drive or even folder...

Or you can always LINUX EXT3 partition.

    Sorry to hear what happened.

SCSI will be phasing out soon, with the new introduction of the new SATA/high RPM drives, which is a fraction of the price, for comparible performance. Run a chain of SATA's and configure them to RAID 5 on a external controller, best and only way for "safe" and "reliable" data.
